Camping Le Paradis Carcans

Stretching between the Gironde Estuary and the Atlantic Ocean, the Médoc Regional Natural Park is a lush area with forested trails, swimming lakes and west-facing beaches (cue unforgettable sunsets). And in the middle of this spectacular region of western France is Camping Le Paradis Carcans. Everything here is set up for families (and their dogs), with a play area and a games room as well as miniature golf and a kids’ club with a range of activities throughout the week (including archery and laser tag games). Don't get jealous, grownups – the site also has a lively programme of events for all residents – from pétanque and table tennis tournaments to DJ evenings, karaoke sessions and sociable apéro gatherings. The indoor heated pool (with paddling pool) has an outdoor area with sun loungers for those who prefer to relax in the open air; alternatively, you can gather a posse and challenge other guests to a beach volleyball match, or hire bikes on site and set off to explore the area on two wheels. It’s a half-hour bike ride (or a five-minute drive) to the beach of Montaut on Lac Hourtin-Carcans, or a 20-minute drive to Atlantic beaches like Plage Océane de Carcans. The small town of Carcans is a five-minute bike ride away (or a 15-minute walk), and you can stop for a drink at a brasserie or stock up on barbecue supplies at one of the supermarkets along the D207 road.

There’s plenty to keep you busy on site, but when it’s time to get out and about you may like to start at Lac Hourtin-Carcans (five minutes’ drive) for walks, sailing, fishing, paddleboarding and swimming – or just relaxing on the beach. Your youngsters may also appreciate some time at spacious Skatepark Lacanau (15 minutes) or surf lessons in Lacanau (25 minutes). If you’re not holidaying with family, you may prefer to turn your attention to things like visits to the Médoc wineries (half an hour), walks along the Gironde Estuary (50 minutes) or oyster feasts in Gujan-Mestras (an hour). The city of Bordeaux (an hour) is packed with things to do – check out the Grosse Cloche and the reflecting pool at Place de la Bourse, walk through immersive art exhibits at Bassins des Lumières and get to know the area’s wine a bit better at Cité du Vin.
