For a break spent as a naturist, check out Camping Naturiste Le Coteau de l’Herm, a green site near Périgueux in the Dordogne. Spanning over eight hectares and sitting on top of a grassy hill, this is a place of spectacular views over lush lawns and valleys. Hikes in these parts include along the forested paths of the dense surrounding woods belonging to the park, or along the famed GR 36 which passes close by (you may have to don your threads for that one though…). The cafés and bistros of Rouffignac village are less than a 10-minute drive away. Facilities are plentiful on site if you do want to stay bare: in high season, you can wake up to the smell of fresh bread. Need to work it all off? Table tennis, pétanque and badminton are all to hand, and the area's a sports hub with canoeing on the Vézère and Dordogne rivers close by. As evening draws in, settle down in the covered communal area for board games, snuggle up at one of the designated campfire spots, or sup on bières at the bar. The kids will already have been packed off to bed, tired out after playing in the pool, sandbox and playground…

Camping Naturiste Le Coteau de l’Herm’s about a 35-minute drive from Périgueux, which is well worth a wander if you’re into medieval architecture. The site's in the middle of the pretty Périgord Noir area, just over a kilometre and a half from the ruins of Château de l´Herm, where you can take a guided tour from the owner. If you're seeking a hardier hike, the GR 36 passes near the site on its mighty from the Normandy coast to Bourg-Madame, on the Pyrenees border (very hardy hikers can then cross into Spain). Nature fans can keep an eye out for 358 different plants and 76 bird species on the way, along with wild foxes, deer and boars. The small local village of Rouffignac’s close to a four-kilometre cycle away: rent a bike from the site to get there, or take the car if you're planning to stock up at the supermarket. Staying on a Sunday? Swing by in the morning, when local stallholders sell homemade goods like wine, foie gras and crepes. This area’s also a sporting hub: canoeists can adventure on the Vézère and Dordogne rivers.
