If beaches are at the top of your bucket list, you have quite a choice; there’s a tiny swimming cove at Plaža Mali Portluk (five minutes’ drive), while pebbled Lanterna Beach (15 minutes) has lifeguards in the summer and plenty of cafés if the kids get hungry. Girandella (also 15 minutes) is the spot for snorkelling around the rocky shoreline and a lively nightlife scene in cool beach bars.
Ideas for family days out away from the seaside include Dubrova Sculpture Park (10 minutes) with all its weird and wonderful art installations, or archery, mock-jousting and the petting farm at Sanc Michael Medieval Theme Park (40 minutes).
Don’t miss out on a stroll around the brightly coloured townhouses in gorgeous Labin (10 minutes’ walk), where you can also browse bijou art galleries. For a day of urban exploring, historic Pula (50 minutes) has spectacular views over the Adriatic Sea and is packed with ancient Roman ruins to discover, including a circular amphitheatre, landmark city gates and a colonnaded temple dedicated to Emperor Augustus.
