Tucked into the Belgian Ardennes at an altitude of 500 metres and 10 minutes’ stroll from the centre of Dochamps in Wallonia, Arden Parks Petite Suisse is a family-friendly site surrounded by greenery. From the terraced pitches, you get superb views of the valley, fields and forests – and what’s more, all you outdoor enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that hiking, cycling and mountain biking trails are directly accessible from the site. There’s lots more outdoor adventure available in the region too.
If you’d rather get your exercise on site, take a dip in the swimming pool or play a gently competitive match on the tennis court. Youngsters can be safely let loose on the climbing frames, while older kids may like to get involved with the Ardennes Rangers programme and do all sorts of organised activities from forest games to building shelters.
Everything is taken care of catering-wise too, with family meals (pizza is a firm favourite) and Belgian beers served in the bar-restaurant open Thursday through Sunday (daily in high season). There’s a shop next-door to the bar for breakfast pastries, essentials, goodies for the barbecue and charcoal, so you’re all set up if you’d prefer to stick with cooking en famille.

So, those outdoor activities. You can hike or hop on a mountain bike and head straight out for the forest tracks that criss-cross the Belgian Ardennes, while popular sports that can be organised on site include rafting or canoeing down the River Ourthe, zipwiring and abseiling. You can scramble around on treetop ropes at Parc Chlorophylle, and if you’re visiting in winter, there’s often skiing at Baraque de Fraiture (both 10 minutes’ drive) too.
Teach the kid about 20th-century history at Bastogne War Museum (35 minutes), where you can see tanks, weapons and live footage relating to The Battle of the Bulge in World War II; afterwards pay your respects to the dead at the landmark marble Mardasson Memorial (40 minutes).
Discover the photogenic village of La Roche-en-Ardenne (15 minutes), where you can potter around attractive cobbled streets lining the Ourthe and explore the hilltop ruins of Château Fort de La Roche. For a family day out filled with wildlife, spot the wolves, bison and wild boar in spacious woodland enclosures at Le Parc à Gibier de La Roche (15 minutes).
