Like the sound of holidaying under canvas with a backdrop of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) peaks? Haste ye to the Y Giler Arms, a traditional country inn just off the A5 (a former coaching route), for tucked behind the pub is a camping field overlooking a lake and edged by the meanders of the River Merddwr. For exercise junkies, this peaceful spot is close to the outdoor-sports hub of Betws-y-Coed (15 minutes’ drive). If you’d rather stay put and drift around on site, the pub opens every evening, where you can be sure of a warm Welsh welcome along with local real ales and home-cooked food served in the lakeside restaurant. Hot breakfasts are also available – just be sure to order yours from the bar the night before – and there are plenty of distractions if the kids get restless, from a darts board and pool table to a variety of board games for you to borrow. Any accompanying dogs are welcome in the public bar and games room, but must be kept on a lead and under close control at all times on the camping field, as it is surrounded by farmland with lots of grazing sheep. And finally, a few practicalities: the site comprises two acres of level pitches, with easy access for towing vehicles. Facilities include modern shower blocks (one with disabled access), a washing-up area, electric hook-ups and water points.

不喜欢 Lack of water to one pair of toilets on Friday as someone put a peg through a pipe? No hot water in same block or washing up block for next few days.

喜欢 Good location, facilities were good, staff in the pub onsite were friendly and helpful. Well worth the price.

不喜欢 Saturday evening, Sunday morning we found there was no hot water in one of the toilet/shower facility blocks. However there was still hot water in the other block so wasn’t much of an issue and may have only been off temporarily.

喜欢 The location was good and the staff in the pub were friendly

不喜欢 The toilets and showers were very dirty. The site was quite busy and I think they just needed to do extra checks and cleaning because of it. The toilets were blocked too

喜欢 The area and the friendliness of staff

不喜欢 Overpriced compared to other sites nearby and there's only 2 showers for the entire site which are like disabled/family rooms with the toilet in there too so very busy most of the time.

喜欢 Love the privacy of the place.

不喜欢 Disliked the noisy ?drunk people at past midnight from the pub who also stayed the place.

I had to keep mop dry the shower/toilet due to wet & sleepery after someone used it. You need to mop dry after showering not everyone does it. Falls Risk area.

喜欢 Absolutely everything, I love this place, friendly, relaxing, accommodating, clean, beautiful place for a quiet and friendly camp. The pub is a great place to socialise with staff and visitors really nice. I would definitely recommend to anyone.

Nip over the Menai Bridge to the Isle of Anglesey (50 minutes), where you can wander the formal waterfront gardens at National Trust - Plas Newydd House and Gardens (55 minutes) and snoop around the 18th-century mansion. Treat well-behaved kids to sightings of endangered snow leopards and red pandas at the Welsh Mountain Zoo (45 minutes). Round off your day by surprising everyone with afternoon tea at The Riverside Chocolate House in Pentrefoelas (five minutes), where you can gorge on handmade chocs and take some home as Welsh souvenirs.
