What a splendid spot for a break in the Caithness countryside – the sheltered pitches at Wick River Campsite sit in a secluded and quiet location right on the banks of the Wick River, and yet they’re only a handy 10-minute walk from the various shops, pubs and takeaways of Wick. That setting also means that you’ll be within easy reach of plenty of things to keep you busy for several days – a short stroll into town gives you the opportunity to board wildlife-spotting boats, sample the delights of the Pulteney Distillery or take a bracing dip in the outdoor tidal pool (or the indoor pool if you’re not quite brave enough to face the chilly waters of the North Sea…) This is a site that’s run as a community enterprise, with all profits fed back into improving the site or contributing to local projects that will benefit visitors and residents alike. Stay here and you’ll be supporting a great cause as well as putting yourselves within easy reach of places like John o’ Groats and activities like fishing, golf and coast walks. Facilities on site have been kept to the essentials, with portable toilets and showers available for guests, and a play park just next door. Dogs are welcome to stay here too and join you for walks along the riverside trails that start just outside the site (these are great for a family bike ride too).

喜欢: Loved the scenery next to Wick river, perfect location for North coast 500.

不喜欢: Didn’t like the midges, but can’t be helped. Toilets also unclean.

喜欢: Site was lovely, right on the river. Although the shower/toilet blocks are temporary they were absolutely fine. Whole site was very clean and staff very friendly

喜欢: The site location was particularly nice, not overcrowded and quiet.

不喜欢: Lack of facilities due to building work over running. Two wash up sinks, only one had hot water which was intermittent. Temporary toilets and showers. Men’s had three toilet cubicles and three shower cubicles for over 60 pitches. Very quickly got dirty, more frequent cleaning would have helped significantly. Very poor, nil facilities as advertised, close to off grid camping as you can get. Not worth the price and a discount should have been offered.

喜欢: Site was well looked after. Grass cut etc.

不喜欢: Building work going on for new facilities. Temporary facilities not adequate for number of guests. Standards of cleanliness not able to be maintained.

喜欢: Lovely campsite very friendly and helpful staff! Lots of good walks and 2 parks for the kids to play one on site and one not far at all we loved our stay and will be back next year!

不喜欢: Shower was going cold then boiling the little one was burnt not badly but enough to put him off wanting a shower but they were clean and tidy

喜欢: The warden & 5G reception

不喜欢: Well what can I say apart from! Apart from it’s not what it says on the tin. On arriving the main access is under a low bridge, watch out for your Motorhome roof. But we did get a text 23mins after arriving giving us a warning to use another route! On arriving we was met by a very nice man who could not stop apologising for things that were not working. Well when I say not working the amenities block had not been finished and was still been built, literally still been built, love the sound of relaxing power-saws and impact drivers. So we had ports cabin showers and toilets. 8 x showers, 6 x toilets split between ladies and gents. Not to forget that the ladies showers were not working. Just to get that extra country smell the grass cutting are dumped at the rear of pitch’s 28- 31 nice smell of compost! You also get 1x washing sink for pots ( no draping board. Pitch’s 27 to 33 are a carpark with grass at the back not individual pitchs. Not available at time of stay: laundry, accessible facilities. Yes it was £31 a night, but some service stations have more facilities. If I was to review Wick town! Two words RUN DOWN, this needs an injection of cash from the government.

Wick, of course, is the place to start – you can walk into the centre of town to visit the Wick Heritage Centre, grab a dram or two at Pulteney Distillery or head to the harbour to book a boat trip taking you out among the sea stacks and along the cliffs to see if you can spot seals, puffins and other marine life. Elsewhere along the coast, find the ruins of Castle of Old Wick (10 minutes’ drive) and Sinclair Girnigoe Castle (15 minutes), explore the intriguing stone creations at Hill O’ Many Stanes (15 minutes) or check out the natural rock formations at Whaligoe Steps (15 minutes) and Duncansby Stacks (25 minutes). Of course you can’t miss the opportunity to go up to the very north of Scotland to visit John O’Groats (25 minutes) and RSPB Dunnet Head (40 minutes). While you’re in the area, stop by at the 16th-century Castle & Gardens of Mey (half an hour) or take a detour to Reiss Sands (10 minutes) for a stroll among the dunes.
