Really, By the Way couldn’t be much more convenient for those walking along the West Highland Way – it’s right next to it. It’s also a top-notch place for leaving the car behind, being just a few minutes’ walk from Tyndrum Lower train station in the small and scenic village of Tyndrum. Not that everyone will want to do that, as this part of the Scottish Highlands is majorly impressive for road trips, with towering mountains, ancient forests and peaceful rivers – and Loch Lomond begins 20 minutes' drive south. Whether you decide to use this site as an epic one-night stop or a base for a longer holiday, count on it having a friendly atmosphere. Modern amenities, including heated showers, toilets, a laundry and drying room, are at your disposal. Stop by the welcoming reception to browse what’s in the small on-site shop or to ask about the many walking and cycling routes that criss-cross the local area. By The Way is at the very northern tip of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, so you’re in a handy spot for the 50-minute drive to Glencoe (for mountain walks, wildlife and Loch Leven). Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the whole of the United Kingdom, is about an hour and a quarter’s drive to the south for a big bucket-list hike, too. After such demanding adventures, it may feel like a treat to be able to return to a peaceful woodland setting. No need to get back in the car again to track down something to eat, as Tyndrum's cafés, pubs or restaurants are all within walking distance of the site. There’s also a well-equipped campers’ kitchen on site for those who’d rather sort their own dinners.

Walkers may want to start by making a list of trails that may be worthy of a visit. The obvious choice is the West Highland Way (direct access from the site), spanning all the way from Milngavie to Fort William. Nearby forests and glens have red deer, golden eagles and other native wildlife, so local walks can be very fruitful. For a day hike, add the summit of Ben Lui (15 minutes’ drive) to your list for a challenge. If you’re not that into hiking, write down activities like mountain biking, fishing, canoeing and wild swimming instead, or opt for a scenic drive towards Loch Lomond (from 20 minutes), Rannoch Moor (20 minutes) or Ben Nevis (an hour and a quarter). Even a ride on the railway can be very scenic. You could also check out castles like Kilchurn Castle (20 minutes) or Finlarig Castle (half an hour).
