Care for a hol among spectacular Scottish scenery… on a fably kitted out park with access to its own loch for fishing – and with its own swish inn and restaurant to keep you fully fuelled? Come and call upon family-run Castle Cary Holiday Park in Dumfries and Galloway. Set a handy seven miles from Newton Stewart, Castle Cary is in splendid surrounds with royally fine views over the local woodland, fields and the estuary of the River Cree. It's centred around a 16th-century baronial castle, part of which has been restored as the Laird's Inn, a warm and cosy space of wooden beams, stone walls and open fires (it's best to book a table in advance here as it's rather popular). The inn's the place to retreat to after a day getting active around the site and in the local countryside: you can fish here or in river, sea or loch nearby; there's sailing, boating, horse riding and wild swimming all nearby, and Galloway Forest Park is 10 minutes' drive north. Castle Cary has excellent amenities to go with its smartly-kept pitches, including a chalet building with showers, toilets, a disabled-access toilet, a baby changing room, a laundry room and sinks; guests also have access to a dishwashing area. The site also has a family-run café which is open daily and which serves breakfasts, meals, snacks, coffee and sweet treats. Facilities are rather fine too, with two big heated pools (one indoor and one outdoor; charges apply for both), a heated paddling pool, a playground, crazy golf, a games room with pool tables and video games, and – pretty much guaranteed to make the kids go gaga – a donkey corner to greet the site's four-legged residents.

喜欢: The clean shower block, the peaceful surroundings and the amount of wildlife is brilliant.

不喜欢: No mirror or anywhere to put your toiletries whilst in the shower and the fact that one cannot help get the floor wet. A door on the shower would be helpful. It would be nice if the pub opened longer but, I understand that if they are not busy then it is not viable.

喜欢: Lovely site, well maintained with exceptionally clean/modern shower block with 10 individual toilet/shower rooms. Has a decent pub which serves good food but check on opening times/days as I think they were closed mon/tue. Didn’t use the pool, games room or cafe but from what I seen looked good enough. Pitch was nice and tidy (grass/electric) with plenty of rabbits running about.

喜欢: Showers and toilet blocks very nice

不喜欢: We are travelling back to the UK and after 5 hours drive arrived at Cary castle last night, when I booked it said that you had an on site restaurant and a cafe for food, but the indoor pool was closed, which we accepted. After arriving we went to get something to eat to find out nothing was open, I checked your website and it says the cafe should be open and on the lairds pub web page also open. We didn’t bring any food due to the above, Very disappointed at the false advertising

喜欢: We were given a comprehensive set of instructions over email following our booking confirmation. We didn’t use the site to its full potential but what we did use/ see was excellent! The toilet/ shower facilities were really well kept and lovely and warm. The pub on site was very welcoming (we didn’t eat but the food looked amazing too), and is a great feature for the site. We’ll definitely be booking again

喜欢: I visited Castle Cary Holiday Park on 7th of April 2024, the Lady at the reception called me to ask if I was going to be there before 1500 as they were finishing due to being a Sunday. I was running late so I said no, she explained everything over the phone to me and was really nice and happy. I got there and due to it being windy I had to move location so emailed the lady back and advised them of this. They were so accommodating and nice. The Security Guard let me borrow his extension so I could have Electricity to my new spot. Thank you Duncan. The Staff were so nice and went out there way for everyone. The restaurant meal and service was 1st class. The toilets and showers were a 1 min walk from the electrical tent site and cleaned everyday. The cleaning lady was so nice as well. Overall a great site.

不喜欢: Opening times for the arcades should be longer and the pool should be heated.

喜欢: Site was nice an quite, toilets were clean and freshly painted.

不喜欢: Site had a 2hr power cut but nobody came to let us know. We were told by someone staying in a static caravan. Shop was only open a few hours and you couldn't get milk or bread. Unfortunately we had rain every day so couldn't use the outdoor games.

To access a good number of these at once, drive 20 minutes to the activity and adventure centre Cream o' Galloway, where there's a woodland playground, rides and slides, nature trails and indoor play. Further afield at Loch Ken there's Galloway Activity Centre, for watersports, mountain biking and climbing. Keep the kids sweet at the Cocoabean Company (20 minutes), where they can get stuck into interactive workshops and indoor and outdoor play: yes, there's a chocolate shop here too.
