Lochs and castles, stanes and lush landscapes… it doesn’t get much more Scottish than this. If a holiday living out romantic visions of Scotland appeals, get along to Balloch O’Dee Campsite, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the Dumfries and Galloway town of Newton Stewart. The farm site is well placed for active forays out and about: it's a 20-minute car journey to Galloway Forest Park, where there are trails to follow, plus deer, goats and birds to spot. Mountain bikers are well placed here too, with not one but two 7stanes centres (Glentrool and Kirroughtree) within 30 minutes of base. Explores can start directly from site as well, as there are plenty of tracks through this scenic slice of countryside. After your outings, evenings can be spent together around the firepit, looking up at the stars (which are easy to see thanks to Galloway Forest Park’s Dark Sky Reserve status). This is a quiet site, so you should have plenty of peace in which to marvel at those skies.

喜欢: Very very quiet, secluded site literally in the middle of nowhere if you get a clear night the sky is beautiful. Lovely warm welcome, everything you need for a relaxing stay. No set pitches, so pitch wherever. Clean and tidy facilities, we didn’t realise but there is a cooking area with a few gas hobs to use if needed so no need to take a stove and gas just pots and pans. No wifi or phone signal at all, we loved this 😀 solved by downloading a few movies to the iPad before we left.

不喜欢: The only issue we had was where we chose to pitch was full of stones/rocks under the turf. Very hard to peg the tent down. We chose not to move as we wanted to stay in the corner sheltered but the shrubbery. Unsure what the rest of the site was like.

喜欢: The area was pretty spacious where many groups can put tents and the nice view all around. Enough toilet facility and we got everything we needed for camping.

不喜欢: We expected to enjoy the evening with our group and we were gossiping and singing songs (not very loudly) but as the place was over crowded (may be!!) the owner asked us to put the voice down, we didn’t expect that after travelling 100 miles and paying for the open space we have to go to sleep by 8:00PM, If that is the case it should be explicitly mentioned at the time of booking as we could do the same on our backyard as that would save a lot of our well earned money. Much disappointed on that aspect.

喜欢: love all the amenities, the gas hob in the cookhouse is so useful when it's a bit too wet for a fire! toilets are always clean and lovely too :) and we love seeing all the chickens running about! we've been twice now and will definitely be back

不喜欢: Didn't realise it was a quiet site. Did not notice it mentioned in the pitchup website while booking (if at all it was mentioned), didn't see any wifi connectivity

Anyone drawn here by the possibility of active stays will be well chuffed by proximity to Laggan Outdoor (half an hour’s drive away) where there are zipwires to zoom along, archery to perfect, Segways to zip around on and slingshots for flinging self and friends through the air. Prefer splashier days? It’s 50 minutes to Galloway Activity Centre to have a go at watersports (and mountain biking and climbing). Other watery options are much closer at hand too – the nearest beach (Sandhead) is about 25 minutes from the site, as is the coastal/loch-side town of Stranraer. Stick around in Stranraer to explore the handful of museums, take a turn on the boating lake and visit the Castle of St John. Literary types should make the next chapter a stop at Wigtown – designated Scotland’s National Book Town – where well-timed stays should coincide with the annual book festival. For a taste of that classic image of Scotland, make sure to round out stays with a tour of the ruined Threave Castle, the Edwardian Broughton House and Garden (the one-time home of artist EA Hornel), and the hulking, stunning Culzean Castle, all between 45 minutes and an hour and 15 minutes from base.
