You’ll never be short of entertainment or far from a great meal when you stay on the hardstanding tourer pitches at historic Friels Bar and Restaurant, in the rural village of Swatragh in County Londonderry, halfway between Belfast and Derry (both under an hour’s drive), and just off the scenic Glenshane Pass. This award-winning pub is in a listed building dating from 1835 – formerly a doctor’s surgery, post office and coaching inn – and now in the hands of the fifth generation of the Friel family, who will happily give you a free tour of the place on weekdays at 12 noon. Chances are you’ll be spending a fair bit of time in there anyway, what with the free-flowing black stuff, classic pub fare and family-friendly vibe. There’s live music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday too, as well as a covered terrace for a pint or two on warmer evenings. And what about the practical stuff? The handful of pitches are fully-serviced with electric hook-ups, drinking water, showers and waste-disposal facilities.

喜欢: The site was clean and tidy and the toilet block was also very clean. The hotel is a 2 minute walk away where the food was excellent and the staff very friendly

喜欢: Excellent site. Large dedicated motorhome area separate from the pub car park. Immaculate, level, and everything you need. £20 a night with £6 discount if you use Pitchup. EHU, loads of taps, fill and empty area, 100 yards from Friels pub/restaurant. Friels is a lovely pub, huge covered outside seating areas, inside is lovely too, big open fire, really friendly staff, and the food is superb. Quality and large portions. Great chef, my steak was cooked to perfection (and I'm fussy). We ate there Friday and Saturday, no cooking for me that weekend and live music each evening. I needed a special tool to fix something under the van and they had it, no problem. Highly recommended and will be back. Just go, it's in our top ten and we've been motorhoming for 14 years, been everywhere, 54000 miles so far. John and Emily Flanagan and wee Bizz the Jack Russell from Co Antrim.

喜欢: fully serviced site that was very well maintained. The showers and toilets were very clean. I didn't notice the traffic on the road adjacent as someone noted. The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent. Will definately return.

喜欢: Friendliness of staff, space, relaxing and great food. Pitch was level and all facilities clean and tidy.

不喜欢: Very little. Perhaps urinals, a seat to sit on in the showers. Ideally separate toilets. £2 a bit expensive for 5mins. Did me but nit my wife.

Time to go exploring? The neolithic stone circle and riverside walks of the dramatic Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are 10 minutes in the car. Further afield, the Causeway Coast offers natural attractions like the famed basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway (45 minutes’ drive) and the dizzying National Trust-owned Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge (55 minutes) across an Atlantic Ocean cove to the islet of Carrickarede (book in advance). There are more alfresco adventures to be had on woodland tracks in Banagher Glen Forest Park (25 minutes) or Drumnaph Nature Reserve (10 minutes) – look out for the madcap sculptures en route – and on boat cruises of Lough Neagh (20 minutes to Ballyronan Marina). For more robust days out on the water, Lake Kilrea waterpark (15 minutes) has family-friendly floating obstacle courses, pedal boats and climbing walls, while Garvagh Forest (10 minutes) reveals tricky trails for mountain bikers. To inject a little culture into your holiday, check out the immersive displays at Seamus Heaney HomePlace in the poet’s home village of Bellaghy (20 minutes), before paying your respects at his grave in St Mary’s Church nearby.
