If you don’t mind getting back to basics in exchange for a privileged location at the foot of Somerset’s Mendip Hills, then Cherry Max might just be the place for you. And the warm welcome you get at this family-run site (five minutes’ drive from Winscombe) also goes a long way towards making up for the limited frills (a shared toilet, drinking water points and recycling bins). But… look around you after setting up on the camping field, and take in spectacular views of the Mendip Hills National Landscape – that’s why you travel, isn’t it? There are some excellent trails to explore in those hills – from easy short routes to moderate circular walks, taking in places like Ebbor Gorge (half an hour’s drive) or Chew Valley Lake (35 minutes), the latter a birdwatching hotspot. Then, about a mile away, there’s the Strawberry Line, a former railway track that’s been turned into a nine-mile walking and cycling route. Finally, the Mendip Way is a long-distance trail linking Weston-super-Mare (20 minutes) to Frome (an hour) via Cheddar and Wells. Your canine buddy is welcome to join you on any of these walks, but you might have to put them on a lead in grazing fields and in areas where there might be ground nesting birds (woodland, grasslands and lake shores). Winscombe has all the shops you might need to gather the ingredients for a barbecue (including a butcher’s, a bakery and a small supermarket), plus several cafés, restaurants and pubs.

喜欢 Peace and quiet, just back to nature, clean n tidy - loo on site was clean and fresh water in the field . Big enough to spread out - loved the bins as they recycle. Just easy overnight stop / hassle free.

喜欢 We arrived in our t4 optional electric, however didnt need it so pitched where we liked . Owners are lovely and friendly .It would we like so no complaints from us .

不喜欢 For us personally nothing ,however I know they was talk of extra showers maybe in future .

喜欢 Beautiful place with lovely friendly owners that will do anything for you to make your stay enjoyable.
Family of red kites live near by and enjoyed watching them gliding over the area which was great to watch.
Will definitely be returning.

喜欢 After struggling to find it at midnight(my own fault)I eventually got there it was very easy to get set up for a much needed sleep,it was very quiet which is just what I wanted,the host even text me when I’d left wishing me a safe journey,which was a very nice gesture

喜欢 Owners, very friendly. Nice Quiet site. Small. Good price with electric hookup. No frills, basic site.

不喜欢 Uneven ground, remember your chocks. Ideal site for vans with own toilet and shower. Only 1 toilet on site and quite a few vans, however, this is clearly advertised. Day we left, a young couple were smoking drugs, which was wafting across field.we reported on way out, and owners were dealing with it.

You’re in cider country here, so a visit to Thatchers Cider (10 minutes’ drive) is a bit of a must-do. Guided tours of their facilities include a primer on how to make this delicious apple-based drink and a sampling session ahead of hitting the shop, where you can stock up on the full Thatchers range. The trails around Cheddar Gorge and Caves (15 minutes) have views over a spectacularly rugged limestone landscape. There are also monumental caverns dripping with stalactites and other rock formations, and a Museum of Prehistory, with displays about Cheddar Man, whose remains (found in 1903) are thought to date back several millennia. Weston-super-Mare (20 minutes), on the Bristol Channel, is your destination for a day at the seaside, with a sandy beach, a pier with rides and events (from musical acts to drag bingo), and the Water Adventure Play Park. Just outside town, the Helicopter Museum holds open cockpit days.
