Make your way to Appledore Park, two miles from Okehampton near the north Devon coast. With 4,500 recently planted trees and hedges (so far), spankingly clean facilities and so many little extra touches, ‘awesome’, ‘top notch’ and ‘knocked our socks off’ are just a few of the accolades Appledore has received from grateful guests. There are nine acres of site land at award-winning Appledore, all with sweet views of the Devon countryside and the park’s surrounding farmland, and landscaped to hold spacious pitches. Dogs are welcome, and handily, there is an enclosed dog walk through the trees or a large field to let them run in. The site's only five minutes' drive away from the A30 road to Cornwall, so it has easy access to the moors and as well as Cornwall, north Devon's beaches. If you’re arriving late, there’s a special late arrivals area with hook-up and water so you can get settled quickly (cuppa). To this smart idea, there is wifi throughout, a washing-up and veg prep area, and a room with charging points and info on the surrounding area. The amenities block has underfloor heating, private cubicles and an accessible area for disabled guests – and are so well maintained they've won a Loo of the Year award. Finally, fancy some fishing? Appledore Park has its own coarse fishing lake for guests and you can also cast off from the quay at Appledore village, take a boat out to the sea (the coast is around 30 miles from the site) or try your luck landing salmon or trout on the River Torridge.

Very good Londis along the road.

不喜欢 Would be helpful to have ‘essentials’ in office but, as I say, small supermarket not too far away.

喜欢 Lovely well kept site. Good sized pitches and good facilities. Beautiful location and great for exploring Dartmoor. Clean warm toilet and shower block. Easy to book and check in etc.

不喜欢 Was surprised to have to pay for hairdryer (albeit only 20p we hadn’t brought any cash with us)!

Phone signal not great so struggled to pick up signal though was better in different locations on site.

喜欢 Very lovely camping site! We were told it was one of there busiest weekends they’ve had as we were there over a bank holiday weekend, however we were on a jumbo pitch and no one was opposite us and only my family next to me on the next pitch so we had so much privacy. The toilet/ shower block was very clean and modern and warm with the under floor heating.

My partner and son love carp fishing and even though the carp were only small they absolutely loved it and the people they met around there were super friendly.

不喜欢 Pretty noisy from about 5am with the road noise but you get used to it and also appreciate there’s nothing that can be done about that.

Maybe a small children’s park or something for kids to keep them busy.

Only an hours free WiFi, and after that you have to pay for it which i didn’t think was great. Should maybe have a code for guests to use while staying for free wifi for their whole stay.

喜欢 Incredibly clean and well thought out facilities. The wooded enclosed dog area was a great addition. Lots of space, nice flat pitches. Helpful owners, they even moved their future bookings around and upgraded someone to a different pitch so I didn't have to re pitch my tent which id mistakenly put too far over, being a newbie.

不喜欢 Hole in the side fence in the dog area which meant I couldn't use it as my puppy kept escaping. Hopefully this is already on their to do list as they seemed very on the ball.

Appledore Park is two miles east of Okehampton on the B3125. Satnav systems may guide you through lanes unsuitable for caravans, so follow these directions for the best towing route. Exit the A30, signposted Okehampton, B3260. Head in the direction of Okehampton. At the traffic lights by the police station take the right-hand lane signposted Hospital, then turn right. At the mini roundabout take the second exit, onto the B3215 to North Tawton & Crediton. Continue on this road. The site is after about two miles on the left, opposite a layby.

Start off at Okehampton to see the ruins of 11th-century Okehampton Castle and explore the industrial past of Dartmoor at Finch Foundry, England’s last working water-powered forge. The Museum of Dartmoor Life, an 18th-century mill with info on the moors throughout the ages and a reconstructed Bronze Age fort and Victorian kitchen, is at the town’s West Street. Nearby Castle Drogo, ‘the last to be built in England’, is now a Grade I-listed building looked after by the National Trust, with the Trust’s highest garden, rose gardens and paths snaking below into the gorge of the Teign valley. ‘Perhaps the most famous walk in Dartmoor’ (so says the NT) is the circular walk from Castle Drogo, above the Teign and along Hunters Path to cross the river. The nearest sands are Bude and Widemouth Bay about 45 minutes’ drive away.
