Everyone in… it’s time for a beach break on the edge of Exmoor National Park. In one direction, Watermouth Valley Camping Park has direct access to the steps that go down the cliff and onto Broadsands beach. In the other direction, a five-minute walk will get you to Watermouth Bay, where there’s fabulous rock fishing, good launching facilities and spectacular coastal walks. That’s not all, believe it or not. The Victorian town of Ilfracombe is 10 minutes’ drive away and surfing beaches such as Woolacombe beach (25 minutes’ drive) and Croyde beach (35 minutes) are also within driving distance. Further on, characterful Lynton and Lynmouth (half an hour) can be found too. Of course, the site is right on the South West Coast Path around North Devon, so it’s a very wise base for hiking fans (just pick up a map of the local area from the site’s shop). What about Watermouth Valley Camping Park itself? Well, the family-run, dog-friendly site has sea views and a sheltered valley where guests can relax and take in the scenery. There’s a children’s adventure playground for kids to let off steam, a handy on-site shop and a modern, clean amenities block with hot showers and electric points for hair dryers, straighteners and razors. The site gets very popular with families during the school summer holidays (May through to September), but at other times, it’s quiet and peaceful and attracts couples and solo travellers.

喜欢: Huge site with plenty of facilities including great on site catering, play park, modern toilets. The location of the site is great, a 20 min steep walk to a wonderful beach, well worth it. If you want sea view then one of the top pitches is required. When we arrived there was a group nearby which was particularly rowdy and so it was greatly appreciated when they were removed by the site team.

不喜欢: On a beautiful sunny weekend the site is packed quite tightly with most pitches quite close together. There were some pitches to the east which were better spread apart. The adjacent holiday park was a bit wild of Saturday night so live music and fireworks until around 11 pm.

喜欢: Lovely family run site. Friendly welcome and the site felt very safe. Pitch was allocated to suit us (single parent with 2 toddlers), right near the playground and toilets. Nice to have hot food on site each evening. Facilities were clean and the showers were the hottest I’ve ever had on a campsite!!

喜欢: The views from just the basic tent pitch up was stunning! Sea view with perfect views of the sun set as well made the night lovely! We were 5 minutes from the walk down to the cove beach which again was amazing. The shop was not extortionate prices like you find on most sites as well which was great. The toilets/shower block was clean and all working well! We also had breakfast from the takeaway hut they have and it was really good food for the price, could not complain! This was our first time camping in years and this experience made us feel very positive about doing it again and it becoming our new hobby! Would highly recommend this site and we will be back for sure!

喜欢: We aren’t very experienced campers, we actually saw this campsite on TikTok so thought we’d give it a go. We got the sea view, non slopping spot and it was absolutely amazing (as you can see from the photo showing our view from our tent). The walks around the site were lovely, it’s all very hilly so it’s not for the light hearted but it’s really rewarding when you arrive at a nice beach or beautiful view. The toilet facilities are great as they’re individual toilet and shower cubicles so there’s plenty of room to get changed comfortably and they’re always being cleaned! They are a bit of a walk from the sea view pitches but that’s the price you pay for such a nice view! The staff were all very friendly and knowledgeable, there’s great facilities for washing up and even a games room and ping pong tables! We would highly recommend the Watermouth Valley campsite and have already spoken to friends and family who have seen our photos and are keen to visit!

Time to tick off the North Devon coves and harbours? Start with splendid Combe Martin (five minutes’ drive), a seaside resort with a sheltered cove for peaceful days on the sand. Surfers might want to slide on over to Saunton Sands (half an hour), while those seeking scenic clifftop hikes will get on well with the Valley of Rocks’ (35 minutes) wild goats and sea views. Take off on a fishing trip or a sea safari from Ilfracombe Harbour (10 minutes). Lundy Island is one of the most popular tour spots for such boat trips. There’s a working lifeboat station in the harbour too if that sort of stuff entertains you. Once you’ve checked out the lifeboats, turn back time a little with a trip to Arlington Court (20 minutes), a National Trust site with a Regency house and a carriage museum. Or perhaps all the way back to the time of dinosaurs? Kids are likely to love the life-sized dino models at Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (10 minutes) and its zoo and fossil museum.
