Falmouth’s National Maritime Museum Cornwall occupies a tall wooden building right on the harbour. Its galleries include the Boat Hall, displaying a collection of watercraft; the Cornish Quayside, with a focus on the local fishing industry; and the RNLI Rescue Zone, which highlights the vital work of the lifeboats. On a peninsula on the River Fal, National Trust - Trelissick Garden (15 minutes’ drive) has far-reaching views of the Carrick Roads estuary, as well as woodland trails and a collection of exotic plants. And – good news for dog owners – there are canine-friendly walks and a beach where your four-legged companion can have a swim. Rebuilt a handful of times during its history, the cathedral in Truro (20 minutes) is an example of Gothic Revival architecture, with stained-glass windows portraying (among religious stories) typically Cornish themes and figures. Collections at the Royal Cornwall Museum explore local archaeology, but there are also Egyptian and ancient Roman displays.
