If you’ve a yen to go wild camping just inside the scenic South Downs National Park, book yourself in at Pit Hill Camping, 15 minutes’ drive from Waterlooville in Hampshire. It’s not quite wild camping, but the next best thing to it, with minimal facilities in stunning leafy surroundings and sheep grazing in the neighbouring field. This small, friendly site has shaded pitches – very welcome in hot weather – and recycling facilities, a water tap and chemical waste disposal. That means it has no electricity, no toilets and no showers – that all adds quite nicely to the ‘proper’ wild camping vibe. As the site is surrounded by wildlife and nature, it’s a good idea to bring insect repellent during the warmer months. You can have a stroll from Pit Hill Camping to the village of Denmead (25 minutes’ walk) to stock up in local shops, enjoy a cup of tea in the cafés or tuck into a traditional fish and chip supper. A number of public footpaths lead directly from the site, so you can easily walk to local pubs and explore the South Downs from the pitches too. An hourly bus service connects Denmead with Waterlooville, host of a Friday outdoor market and gateway to the South Downs. 喜欢 Quiet, shady, simple, reasonably priced and really pleasant. Mr. Weston is jolly and helpful, expect to have your leg pulled in the nicest way possible. It’s almost wild camping at the Pit Hill site, so you’ll need alternative toilets — a 25 minute walk along the fields down The Wayfarer’s Walk to pubs in Denmead in the evening worked for me and I had a couple of nice pints too. It’s 25 mins from Portmouth docks by car. If you’re self-sufficient and like it quiet this is a lovely place to pitch your tent.

喜欢 Lovely and quiet apart from sheep and birds and the occasional argumentative squirrel, which was exactly what i needed. I'd rather find peace in the noises of nature than notifications on my phone. Perfectly simple and a fab nights sleep xx

喜欢 small, peaceful site with like minded peaceful campervan folk. walks from the field. rural location so the access roads like others have said are a bit narrow but we never met anyone. owner very friendly, came round in the evening for you to sign in and gave suggestions for things to do nearby. would definitely recommend

喜欢 Lovely farmer David. Told us all about local places to visit and asked the kids if they’d like to fed the lambs in the morning. Needless to say they loved it. Very friendly, would return.

不喜欢 Very narrow lane into the campsite with minimal passing places. That said it’s a dead end so not much traffic either (we don’t see anything).
