Chosen Cheshire? Then also choose a cheery welcome from the good folks at Pitch and Canvas. This family-run site is a mile from Tattenhall and around a 25-minute drive from the centre of Chester. Pitch and Canvas is in an area of low light pollution, making for some great stargazing at night. The meadow also gets some spectacular sunsets and has views over Cheshire's unmistakable Sandstone Ridge. If you don’t fancy cooking there are handmade pizzas to order, or it’s a 25-minute amble to a classic country pub with classic country fare and a range of local ales, or to a smart restaurant that serves up an ever-changing menu based on its own kitchen garden. There’s a small supermarket 15 minutes’ drive away, but for a truly fab brekkie, you’re strongly encouraged to snaffle some local eggs, bacon and sausages from the site's small shop (and reward your forward planning with an ice cream while you're there). The site also lays on activities for guests, including cookery demos, gin tasting and family picnics (the team can tell you more). The site’s toilet block houses its clean, modern facilities in a snug wooden hut – sinks, showers (including one with a family room to make it easier with children) and toilets all a very short stroll from your pitch.

喜欢: Lovely campsite not over crowed. Toilets and showers very clean. Was updated on where our pitch was and how to get to the campsite. Very spacious pitches.

喜欢: The location was lovely, the setting of the site is absolutely stunning. Pizza van on the Saturday night was fantastic!

不喜欢: There was an enormous group staying at the same time which really dominated the entire place. They were quite loud (understandable given the number!) but the owners didn’t seem to do much about this.
If we’d known in advance we would have asked to be in the back field where it was a bit quieter. Facilities are fairly limited, whilst there is a freezer for ice blocks, this is only accessible at certain times of the day, not ideal if you’re out and about.

New facilities were clean and very good.
Large pitch and lots if space on second field.
Small shop for essentials.
Fantastic location.

不喜欢: Needs another water supply - current one is a long way from the far end of the field.
First 'tent' field was very crowded.
No WiFi.

喜欢: Great hosts.
Large pitches. Lots of room in second field.
New toilet/shower facilities were good.
Lovely location and scenery although you do need transport as local facilities are a good 30 minute plus walk although small onside shop for most basics.

不喜欢: Water taps are long way from furthest pitches. Would be more convenient th have some more spread out.
First field was very crowded on this weekend.

喜欢: A lovely site. Staff were welcoming and professional, had a lovely chat.
Plenty of space and large pitches. Clean toilets and showers, plenty hot water.
Had a fantastic stay, despite the thunderstorm and the rain, but that's the UK. We will be staying again

If one ever needed a good reason to go out for a country walk, it’s present here in the shape of The Ice Cream Farm, the biggest ice cream-themed adventure park in the world and a half-hour walk away. Hikers should make a beeline for the Sandstone Trail, a 34-mile route starting around a 10-minute drive from the site. You needn’t walk the entire length; pick up a booklet locally for info on shorter sections that take in views of castles, fields and hills before depositing you for a well-earned drink at a pub. If you’d prefer to explore on horseback, there’s a riding centre 10 minutes’ walk from the site that can organise treks for all abilities. For a spot of history, take a trip to one of the nearby castles, such as Beeston Castle (10 minutes), a medieval structure set on top of a cliff, surrounded by a 40-acre woodland park and with some far-reaching views on clear days. Gothic beauty Cholmondley Castle is a little further away at 15 minutes and has nature trails, play areas and a farm shop as well as some gorgeous gardens to wander around.
