'All singing, all dancing' is what the friendly folk at York Meadows Caravan Park eight miles from the grand old centre of York say about their site, and after a quick perusal of the site facilities you'll likely fully agree. The location here is pretty splendid too, tucked down a private lane near the village of Sheriff Hutton, close to York but also the Yorkshire coast, and surrounded by a network of public footpaths including the Ebor Way, Wold Way and Centenary Way. (If you fancy wandering further, ask the owners for their suggestions, as they're happy hikers of these parts.) Don't want to walk too far? Wander into the friendly village instead for the village shop and to investigate the two pubs. However. The York Meadows folk also point out that guests might not want to leave the park at all… The play area is just grand, with swings, zipwire, a climbing frame and a slide, as well as outdoor table tennis, giant draughts, and snake and ladders; meanwhile, the reception shop sells all you might have forgotten such as bread and milk as well as burgers and bangers: yes, barbecues are allowed here… Don't fancy cooking? Ring one of the local takeaways and get your dinner delivered right to the site, or try a couple of the York Meadows's team's recommendations like the Highwayman Inn in Sheriff Hutton, selling homemade food using fresh local produce, or Thompsons Fish Restaurant and takeaway on Malton Road: anywhere that's won awards for its fish and chips might sound pretty grand to you too.

喜欢 The receptionist staff is really friendly and very accommodating upgraded our pitch because of my son has learning difficulties and I could see him straight across to the park

喜欢 Beautiful location, nice clean site but I felt it had no feeling or warmth to it. Everything was strategically placed.. Staff very helpful & friendly .
Hairdryer available in the toilets .
Lovely walk in to local village & great food at the pub.

不喜欢 Toilet blocks plastic flowers hanging from the ceiling. Also the showers were at such an angle everything got wet in the cubicle. Shower heads can’t be moved.
Paid extra for WiFi & still no reception

喜欢 Very friendly welcome and easy to find pitch.
Toilet/shower block - only the one on site and was a little bit busy at times - however very clean.
Wifi is chargeable - but is available and we found it was a good signal

喜欢 Great little play area for children (we didn't have any with us).

不喜欢 The distance from anywhere. The 1.5 mile walk to the only local pub was along a fast dangerous road, not a pleasant walk, dodging traffic while jumping on and off uneven grass verges, which were full of rabbit holes, shouting above the traffic noise to warn each other of cars coming. No taxi's, bus every 2 or 3 hours (which broke down and left us in the middle of nowhere to walk). The half hour walk to the bus stop along another busy road with no pavements, which was a HGV route, really dangerous. We emailed ahead to ask about distances to amenities and safety of walking with a dog, we also asked about bus/taxi services as we had experienced problems once before. We were told the bus was 300 yards away, the local pub was just down the road with two other pubs bit further and all were within an easy walk, also lots of local taxis, none of this was true. First pub is mentioned above, other two were 4 miles away and it was 1,200 yards to the bus stop and the wait for a taxi was 4 hours. The very rude older man (not Paul) in the office. When we mentioned the email from the site that hadn't told us how dangerous the road was, even when we had asked pacifically about this. We also said it was impossible to walk in the dark, so no going out for an evening meal, which is something else we had asked about, he said "get a torch" and followed it with we needed spoon feeding.

Sheriff Hutton is a pretty place to start when considering the countryside around here. And then one must go Yorkwards, to the splendid city with York Minster, cobbled streets, York Dungeon, York Railway Museum, the Jorvik Viking Centre… Spend some time too among the market, shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs of the Shambles, the teeny streets that are among the most snapped shots of York. Plenty of indoor options are around if the weather decides to be a tad inconsiderate: you could dash to an indoor play centre nearby or take the tour at York's Chocolate Story (yes, tastings are included…) Bigger parks like Flamingo Land and Lightwater Valley are in the area too. Golf? Greens surrounding the park include Sandburn Hall (with other activities too), York Golf Club, Fulford Golf Club, Easingwold Golf Club and Ampleforth Golf Club. Fishing? Also popular in these parts: cast off locally at Pottery Pond, Birkdale Farm, and Brickyard Farm Lakes. And of course as it's Yorkshire, there are also piles of abbeys, castles, stately homes, historic houses and museums to visit – without even mentioning the moors or the Yorkshire coast…
