What’s on the cards at the gorgeous Garth Hill Farm in Co. Durham? Views? Indeed – of the Wear Valley and the Teesdale countryside, no less. Country pubs and cafés? Plenty – in fact, both are five minutes’ walk away. Animals? There’s a whole host of them, including pygmy and Toggenburg goats, sheep, lambs, donkeys, ponies, horses and hens. That’s a lot to take in, but don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of time at this peaceful site. There are views for miles over the surrounding countryside, so just kick back and unwind. The animals on the farm are all friendly. Dogs are welcome here too, just as long as they’re kept on a lead due to the farm animals. Those who have visions of active days out will have no trouble here, as County Durham’s biggest forest, Hamsterley Forest, is 10 minutes’ drive away. It has mountain biking and running trails and a kids-friendly, Gruffalo-inspired trail. The city of Durham is half an hour’s drive away for those who’d like to go sightseeing (and who wouldn’t, with Durham Cathedral, Durham Castle and Crook Hall at your disposal?). Getting about is easy, as access to the site is 100 metres from the A68, which has links to the A1. There’s plenty to do for all ages at Garth Hill Farm, whether it’s walks, bike rides or jogs out in the countryside or picnics on site. For the latter, gather your goodies from the shopping centre 10 minutes’ drive away, which has a big supermarket.

喜欢: Stunningly beautiful location. It had a clean portaloo, dog-poo bin and water tap. Good communication - received a text and was met at the gate by the friendly, efficient owner. Just a lovely, simple place to stay.

喜欢: Lovely back to basics pop up site with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Karen the owner was very friendly and helpful , greeting us on arrival. Lots to do in the area, Hamsterly Forest less than 10 minutes drive away, petting farm nearby with lovely cafes and local pub. Loved being able to choose where we camped to be next to our family, with plenty of room for little ones to play in safety.

喜欢: Nice clean campsite. Located close to Bishop Auckland, so ideal place to stay for Kynren. Nice friendly, helpful owner. Would happily stay there again.

喜欢: Really fast response off the owners and we arrived at the site which was picture perfect. The views are beautiful and it's nice and peaceful. Couldn't fault it. We'll be back.

喜欢: This was a lovely campsite - unfortunately we didn't have the best weather whilst we were there, but were still able to enjoy the beautiful views. The campsite is very quiet but has easy access to main routes, etc so makes a great stopover. Toilet was spotlessly clean and the kids enjoyed seeing the animals at the farm. Karen was a very friendly and welcoming host.

喜欢: Lovely field and a very friendly welcome. We had lunch in the 68 Cafe and then a few drinks in the Sportsman in the evening. Both were very easy to walk to within ten minutes. A nice relaxing end to our holiday thank you.

喜欢: We had a brilliant stay, the host was brilliant very accommodating and friendly, first day let us come in and see the farm animals with the kids which they loved, lovely views and plenty to do around the area, we would defiantly stay again.

喜欢: Lovely little pop up site with great local amenities. the site is ideal to use as a base camp to explore the area. The field was big enough to allow small children to run around without disturbing others. Karen the owner was incredibly friendly and ensured we had everything we needed and was able to offer assistance when needed as well as cleaning the sites portaloos on a daily basis. Would not hesitate to book again

喜欢: Hostess was lovely, available to answer any questions. Portaloo was spotless (I didn't even know that they were delivered that clean) Animals in the next field were inquisitive. Brambling was good! Easy to pitch on level spot.

What was going on here in the centuries past? Well, you’ll get to know a little about the local history at the Beamish, the Living Museum of the North, (35 minutes’ drive), which has open-air reconstructions of northeast life between the 1820s and 1950s. That might get you in the spirit for more historic tales. If so, Kynren (10 minutes) runs a live show all about the many wars, rebellions and other mysteries throughout England’s history. For historic sites in the flesh, Barnard Castle (20 minutes) is arranged around medieval castle ruins (hence the name). Bishop Auckland (10 minutes), which is where the Kynren show takes place, also has other splendid attractions, such as Auckland Castle (10 minutes), a bishop’s palace with the Spanish Gallery (10 minutes) dedicated to Spanish art.
