Keen for a country escape close to Kidderminster? Castle Gate Campsite could be the place for you – wend your way to its Wolverley location to be 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of town, and well within reach of lots of ways to spend Worcestershire days. This working farm site once had its own castle; it’s long gone now, but you’ll still see traces of the walls around the park, and be greeted by two grand gatehouses. With the fancy focal point no more, life proceeds at a rather more sedate and simple level: this is a rural back to basics place, where frills are limited to just a toilet and sink and where neighbours are mostly cattle and horses. To fill up on fresh air, take a little trot around the park, following the trails and seeking out little sunny spots in the wooded areas. You may also want to consider barbecue based cookouts, or leave all the foodie prep to the pros by toddling off to one of the local pubs – there are two rather fine options down by the river, about a half-hour amble away. (If you opt for the Queens Head, take some time to peruse the pub’s team photos to see if you can spot a famed musician among the ranks.)

喜欢: Lovely area, great woods for walking in, close walking distance to local villages.

不喜欢: Not a fan of portallos (personal opinion but others may not mind this) but there were a lot scattered around the site so everyone wasn’t using the same one! Plus they were very clean! Further down the site a group of campers were playing loud music into the early hours which kept most of us awake!

喜欢: Plenty of space and choosing own pitch.

不喜欢: Getting up the slope from the bottom of the site, my campervan got stuck on the wet grass and mud. Luckily some other guests helped me out!

喜欢: Great site the kids and dogs loved exploring! Plenty of space, felt like we were the only ones there. Easy access and we had a nice stroll into the local village for a pint too!

喜欢: We had an incredible time at this location, which served as an excellent base for our adventures. The campsite was situated in a clearing surrounded by woods, and it was well-maintained and adequately marked. We had a sense of freedom to laugh out loud, joke, and play games because there was plenty of space to set up camp without being too close to anyone. All the other campers, including a sizeable group of young individuals, were well behaved and followed the rules while showing respect towards their neighbours. I highly recommend this place as it has a somewhat wild atmosphere and the toilets are evenly spread out throughout the site. Now that we’ve found it, we will return.

喜欢: This site was amazing for basic camping we stopped with our 8 children ranging from 4/15 and each and everyone of them enjoyed themself. The owner come around to check everyone was okay and to let everyone know where they would and could not go i will be going here again with our family…

Once you’ve warmed up on the farm, head off to the Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve 20 minutes away, for walks through the woodland, meadows and orchards that make up the 549-hectare reserve. Tread quietly for glimpses of deer, butterflies and kingfishers; you can always save your yelling for a ride on the ziplines at the forest’s Go Ape! adventure park. If farm life’s given the kids (or, ahem, you) a desire to get hands-on with the animals, take flight to Little Owl Farm Park (20 minutes’ drive), where they (or, ahem, you) can pet chicks and bunnies and make pals with the pigs. Best be keeping your hands to yourselves if you then head on to the West Midland Safari Park (15 minutes) – the beasts here are rather bigger and better viewed from a safe distance. Holiday not complete without hitting a few balls about? Depending on your golfing prowess you may like to swing your way round the 18-hole course at Kidderminster Golf Club, or putt your way round the zany obstacles at the miniature golf course in Wolverley. Train buffs will know Kidderminster as a place to join the steam powered Severn Valley Railway; it’s also home to the Museum of Carpet (a bit niche, this one, but with high praise from past visitors).
