Whether it’s picnics looking out over the marina or lazy mornings walking along the Coventry Canal, there’s plenty of scope for peaceful activities at Kings Orchard Marina in the middle of the Staffordshire countryside. This is a pretty marina location with 20 acres of space, all landscaped and maintained to a high standard, with a marina basin for views and a canal, narrowboat hire and local pub 10 minutes’ walk away. For any keen explorers, the icing on the cake might be that historic Lichfield is 10 minutes’ drive to the west. That means you can explore the medieval city’s 12th-century cathedral, market square and the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum by day before heading back in the evening to use the site’s food prep area to build a barbecue spread on the grills provided. Handily, there's a food shop under five minutes' drive away. The free-to-use barbecues and picnic tables dotted around the site are useful facilities for those quality times. As for features of convenience, Kings Orchard Marina also has toilets, showers, waste disposal and an Elsan unit. With the Staffordshire countryside on all sides, walk to your heart’s content, but don’t forget that real ales, traditional pub fare and a beer garden await at the local dog-friendly country pub alongside the Coventry Canal. This place, 10 minutes’ walk away, is a good spot for those of you who have brought dogs on your holiday.

不喜欢: How this site got the 8.8 rating is beyond me. Pot holes on the road it that bad when we got home, we discovered damage on our caravan. All showers need major work updating them. No lights on site at night. Bottom touring pitches on the way to marina carpark very inconsiderate speeding through area. Not child friendly should be adults only.

喜欢: Pitches were private with a hedge in between.. gravel pitches Plenty of room to park the car You pay £20 refundable deposit for showers and toilets key also gives you access to the tow paths if required

喜欢: The pitches are a generous size, well gravelled, level, screened by hedges and get plenty of sun. They are set below the marina which cuts out a lot of the wind. Although you don’t get a view of the boats. Arrival is simple and well executed. You will need to get a key for the toilets and towpath gate which is £20 refundable. Staff were friendly and professional. As a group, we hired a day boat from the Marina which was also excellent and very affordable if there are enough of you! The pub a short walk down the towpath or road is really nice (The Plough). You should definitely book if you want to eat as it’s really popular.

不喜欢: The toilets/showers would be a fair walk if you use them. However I didn’t, so it’s not a problem for me! The potholes in the long drive are a real bone shaker. They’ve got even worse since my last visit and you just can’t avoid them.

Strap yourself in for a ride and put your bravery to the test at Drayton Manor Theme Park (20 minutes’ drive) or take things at a slower pace around Beacon Park (10 minutes), where there are 70 acres of wildlife and gardens. As you might already be able to tell, there’s a wide choice of things to entertain yourselves with in these parts… The Foxfield Light Railway (45 minutes) is one way to discover the Staffordshire countryside, on a steam train trip that has experiences like cream tea journeys or driver experiences. Other historical detours could include a visit to The Staffordshire Regiment Museum (10 minutes), a military museum, or the 150-acre National Memorial Arboretum (10 minutes). Outdoor activities on the mind? There’s a brief stroll around The Green Fairy Woods (10 minutes), great for kids, or miniature golf, sports courts, nature trails and play areas around Beacon Park (10 minutes). SnowDome (15 minutes) runs skiing, snowboarding and ice skating sessions or lessons. Meanwhile, Go Ape courses, bike rides and walks are a staple in the Cannock Chase District (20 minutes).
