Craving that feeling of being in the middle of nowhere… but also kind of keen to be close to local amenities? The answer lies at AllThings Camping, a quiet place that’s tucked away in the Northamptonshire countryside but also well placed for lots of handy infrastructure. At this laidback off-grid site, you’ll be staying in a peaceful seven-acre field with simple facilities including a shower and a couple of compost toilets. There’s also a shared mess tent with some basic kitchen kit (including a kettle and some tea and coffee supplies) and seating for those times when you need somewhere weatherproof to relax. Coffee and cakes are available on site during the school holidays and the big Silverstone weekend (the famed circuit is a 20-minute drive away). The vibe here is super chilled, with kids and dogs welcome, plenty of space to relax and low levels of light pollution often leading to some pretty good stargazing. Nearby, you’ll be able to walk in the woods or along the canal (five minutes’ drive). Shops, cafés, boat rentals and river swimming spots are also a few minutes’ drive away, and there’s a Roman fort about a mile away. So far, so rural… but in fact there are plenty of useful facilities nearby, either in the nearby village of Nether Heyford (five minutes) or in bigger towns like Daventry (10 minutes) and Northampton (20 minutes). AllThings Camping is also very handy for the M1, as it’s only about 10 minutes’ drive from Junction 15.

喜欢 Quiet, natural, rural site. Plenty of level pitches. Fire pit in middle of field. Well kept compost toilets and plenty of room. Views from the top of the field are lovely. Plenty of walks around. Owner on site and is friendly and helpful. Oh and guinea fowl wander across the site in the mornings

不喜欢 The facilities, we were told there was hot water for the shower… It fired up and tepid water for seconds then freezing water followed, not great!

喜欢 Perfect back to basics site, good facilities with the 2 composting toilets and a really cool outdoor style shower. Plenty of space on the pitches. Good flat ground for tents. Super quiet and peaceful, basically zero car noise even during the day. Pubs driving distance away and a cafe about 15 mins walk too. Libby was a great host, super friendly and helpful about everything I asked.

No signage so by the time I had found the site it was too late (had a train to catch). Site entrance was unappealing and unwelcoming.

To address your points Yes it can be quite bleak and grim here during winter, its rural England. Every booking gets sent a welcome pack with explicit directions and tel to call. You didnt use it. The scruffy entrance is for the people who can see the magic hidden behind it. 😁

喜欢 The view, and accessibility, This campsite has the off grid feel but is only 5 minutes away from a well stocked village shop. The owner Libby is lovely and just wants to share her land and allow people to enjoy fresh air and space. I went for one night with my son and we had a lovely time. The toilets are clean and well maintained but we didn’t try the shower. I know she is trying to sort the leaky water pipe but we had no issues washing up. She even said we can book for a day trip and it’s dog friendly It is quite hard to find a nice place to do a family BBQ or just allow kids to roam free or kick a ball around but this is our go to place now.

National Trust - Stowe Gardens (half an hour) features a vast area of parkland designed by Capability Brown, plus manicured gardens dotted with follies and monuments such as the Temple of British Worthies, a semi-circular structure paying homage to key figures such as Queen Elizabeth I, Shakespeare and Sir Isaac Newton. Put your code-breaking head on and visit the complex at Bletchley Park (35 minutes), which was an intelligence hub during World War II, with mathematicians like Alan Turing trying to decode the enemy’s encrypted messages. Exhibitions are spread out over multiple huts.
