The centre of Leicester is only about a 20-minute drive from Fox’s Furrow – and yet this site’s immediate surroundings are properly peaceful and rural, with fields and natural countryside views all around. The beauty of all this, of course, is that you can have a nicely varied stay here if you like, perhaps pedalling along National Cycle Route 63 one day (it’s about a mile away) and then heading into the city to visit the National Space Centre the next. There’s a bus stop just under a mile away in the village of Houghton on the Hill if you’d rather travel by public transport. Also in the village are a couple of pubs, a village shop, a pharmacy and a fish and chip shop – all of it handily a short walk away across the fields (or a couple of minutes in the car). Getting in, out and all around should be straightforward here as the site is about a quarter of a mile from the A47; there’s no hint of the main road while on site, though, as the place has a very natural feel to it and is surrounded by a tree belt that provides plenty of privacy as well as acting as a home to local wildlife. In keeping with this rural setting, facilities have been kept to a minimum here – the essentials are covered, however, with a wifi connection, a washing-up area and toilet/shower facilities housed in a very stylishly decorated classic shepherd’s hut.

Guests must only use green chemicals or no chemicals for the chemical toilet disposal. Units larger than 7 metres long and 3 metres wide are not allowed. Access to the site is via a rough farm track and may not be suitable for vehicles with lowered suspension.

喜欢: Small site that is relatively new, with young plants dividing pitches, which has been looked after even with very wet spring weather. Really good showers in toilet block.

不喜欢: A lot of work has gone into terracing the pitches as site is on huge slope, but with just a bit more care most could be level, but they aren’t. The 6amp limit for hookup is restrictive.

喜欢: Well this was my first time camping ever and what a lovely place to stay the toilets are a nice size and I'm a big lad, the showers are brilliant, lots of power and heat and well tidy, it rained heavily and the ground was fine, me and my dog had a lovely stay. Will be back 😊

不喜欢: None really, the ground wasn't level but not a problem, a bit of wood will do the trick. The WiFi could have been better

喜欢: Friendly staff. Very Peaceful location. Toilet block was a nice rustic feature. Facilities were spotless Easy to find Will definitely be returning Overall a fantastic weekend As a side note, there is no play space for children (which we are not that bothered about but a family may care)

不喜欢: Our only criticism would be that the hardcore needs compacting as still quite loose, don't let this put you off though, the owners are there to help out if you get stuck, they kindly helped the people on the pitch next to us.

喜欢: We loved the fact that it was small and set out in the country, but not far from civilisation. Very nice shower/toilet/washing up facilities and excellent communication throughout via text message.

不喜欢: There are a few slopes, but great that levelling ramps were provided for the van.

Getting out to see more of your rural surroundings should be easy enough here, as there are some great walks in the vicinity, along with those bike rides on National Cycle Route 63. Rutland Water (20 minutes’ drive) is another good place for a walk or a bike ride (there’s a path that goes all the way round the lake), and you can also play golf, try your hand at sailing or bounce across the inflatable aqua park. If the kids are keen to meet cute animals, head along to Windmill Farm Park (15 minutes) for indoor and outdoor animals, play areas and a café. Bird on the Hand Falconry Experiences (15 minutes) makes a great day out for those keen to get up close to the big birds. Over in Leicester (20 minutes) there are plenty of options for a day out (especially if you need rainy-day activities) – the city is home to the National Space Centre as well as the Retro Computer Museum and King Richard III Visitor Centre.
