Hoping for a quick rural escape from urban life? Or perhaps somewhere that you can have an open-air stay but with the option of heading into the city for a day trip? Either way, heading into the Hertfordshire countryside for a stay at Meadow Brook Farm is a fine idea – this spacious site is in the Chiltern Hills about three miles from the centre of Tring (a handy place for shops and places to eat, as well as the station with train services to/from London). Despite being so close to useful town amenities, this is a fabulously rural spot, with sheep and geese on the 22-acre farm and open countryside all around. You’ll be staying in a well-kept grass meadow with trees around the edges and streams to look out for. Not wanting to disturb the natural surroundings too much, the owners have kept facilities to a minimum, just installing a barbecue area and a portable toilet for guests to use. Out to explore the countryside? Along one side of the meadow is Wilstone Reservoir, where you can pick up a path leading to a cluster of reservoirs in Marsworth – and the Grand Union Canal runs close by too, with a towpath punctuated by several waterside pubs. Wendover Woods, Ivinghoe Beacon and the Ridgeway trail are other options for getting out and about nearby.

喜欢: Simon (the owner) was very friendly and went out of his way to be helpful - he said he has only started the campsite this summer - so it's currently quite basic. Brand new power shower and handy dressing room with mirror and furniture (both inside the stable)

不喜欢: Toilet tents (chemical) were at the far end of camping field. Shower (in stable) at the entrance to camping field. Would be nice to have a toilet near the shower. Lack of privacy for showering - take a friend or family member to stand guard - Simon does intend to put a lock on the inside of the stable door.

喜欢: The location was good, secluded and ideal for families as there are no obvious risky areas like rivers around us. There was a road passing just behind where we were which was not too noisy. Simon was very kind and provided logs and towels as it was a wet day. The tents and the beds were good and very comfortable.

不喜欢: The only downside was the toilet and the tap that was not fixed in place to give you enough height underneath to wash your hands or any dishes.

喜欢: Really lovely campsite, plenty of space, flat pitches, great location for the countryside and right next to the reservoir. If you’re looking for peaceful amd not bothered about facilities it’s great. I loved it. Simon was really helpful, thank you for the fire pit!

喜欢: Really close to the reservoir and a farm shop. Simon was very friendly and helpful. It was a hot day so he pointed out the stream for us to paddle in and find fresh water muscles so that kept my daughter entertained. We petted the sheep and even got a tractor ride back to our tent, it's only a short walk but lots of fun.
