Who needs to organise a hol all the way over in South America when you can linger beside the llamas at Five Acres Farm Campsite in Derbyshire? This park full of furry, friendly animals may not be within spitting distance of treks to Macchu Picchu, but it does have Peak District paths for hikes and cycle rides on the Monsal Trail starting from a five-minute drive away. The views are also nothing short of lush: the site is surrounded by wide open fields, and walks can be had without needing to get in the car towards the nearest settlement of Wardlow and up to Hay Cop (20 minutes on foot) for a look over the local landscape. If you’d rather dig into dessert than dawdle, the tarts and puddings of countrywide renown are at Bakewell, the only market town in the Peak District and a 15-minute drive from the site. Not too stuffed to think about stocking up on supplies after sampling the wares? Food stores are here too and other urban areas worth a wander for chocolate-box houses and cutesy craft shops include Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth, all within 20 minutes. Plenty other activities can be had in these towns too: Tideswell’s got the impressive St John the Baptist Church to have a gander at; Castleton’s known for its caverns where the famed Blue John stone is mined, and Bamford has three different dams to trek around. Chatsworth, meanwhile, is home to swanky stately mansion Chatsworth House – yep, that one mentioned in Pride and Prejudice and regularly voted Britain's top country house.

喜欢: The location was very peaceful and quiet. Ideal for a short stay during the quiet season. Close to areas of interest. We spent a sunny day in Bakewell which is a lovely place to visit.

不喜欢: The showers, my husband had a cold shower on the first day. Mine heated up. The shower cubicles were small and fixed to the wall with no attachment. There was only 1 washing up station. If the site was very busy there would be a waiting time. I could not find a designated area for disposing of the toilet waste. That being said I would still go back because it was quiet and the scenary was lovely.

喜欢: Great open space and free to choose own pitch. Lovely host who came to say hello on arrival and checked daily if all ok. Well organised toilets and showers, pot washing room had good ideas on where to eat and local places of interest.

喜欢: Had an incredible time, the campsite is in a great location, it’s very peaceful with a very relaxed checking in system (you just show up and pitch up and someone comes to check on you at some point during your stay). The toilets and showers and kept in very good condition and are very clean. The camping field is surrounded by grazing sheep and at dusk there’s lots of bats. You can barely hear the noise from the roads and the view is beautiful whichever way you’re facing, we were lucky enough to catch the northern lights during our stay!

喜欢: Lovey open views (brilliant sunset) Very clean site, well looked after, owner obviously making improvements all the time (hedge planting, new toilets etc) Chops your own pitch upon arrival, farmer/owner came round about 6.30pm to check people, offer fire pit rental and chat. Llamas in the field behind us, sheep and lambs all around. Simple site, no electric but freezer for ice packs. Easy very pretty walk to Litton (and pub) along Cressdale (about an hour with young kids)

If guests do decide to give pedal pushing on the 8.5-mile and traffic-free Monsal Trail a go, they can use it to reach Bakewell, stopping at Monsal Head on their merry way for views of the River Wye and the Headstone Viaduct. For leisurely walks with typically stunning Peak District views, try Mam Tor or the Ladybower Reservoir (both around 20 minutes’ drive away); hardier hikers can take on an expedition to Kinder Scout, 40 minutes' drive away, to scale the national park’s highest point. Or, if you’d rather do your sightseeing underground, boat trips through Speedwell Cavern are 20 minutes away...
