'Large beer garden' – surely one of the most enticing phrases language has to offer? If you're nodding your head vigorously by this point, take a closer look at this popular pub site in the southern Peak District, where it's a toss-up between energetic cross-country treks and laidback times back at base. The Royal Oak is in Hurdlow, a hamlet just off the A515 and five minutes' drive from the village of Monyash. This family-friendly Derbyshire spot is sandwiched between the lush limestone valleys of Dovedale (20 minutes' drive) and the market towns of Buxton and Bakewell (both 15 minutes). It's also a few steps from the Tissington Trail and High Peak Trail, which run along a shared car-free path that splits into two routes a couple of miles to the south at Parsley Hay bike hire centre (five minutes). It sure is handy pitching up right by a pub, especially when that pub has a kids' menu and welcomes dogs. The Royal Oak serves up lunches and dinners seven days a week. (Book ahead if dining here, as tables are rightly in high demand.) With open fires for chillier days and that ample outdoor space for when the weather is fine, fully expect to be spending quite some time in these mellow surrounds… The site has unisex toilets and showers; extra toilets are available in the pub when it's open.

喜欢: The place was easy to find the food in the pub was lovely the staff were amazing and very welcoming and friendly plenty of facilities to use would go again in better weather

不喜欢: There wasn’t much to dislike but there could have put some toilets nearer the big tents for at night time and better lighting near the steps and put move gravel on the steps to the tent area

喜欢: Just me and my young son stayed in a campervan, weather was awful so pitches were boggy so I opted to stay on the car park which was absolutely fine. Lovely site and pub, staff are friendly and helpful. Showers and toilets were nice and clean. Food was outstanding! A good base for travelling around. I will definitely stay again.

喜欢: Good location, on site pub with food is good. Clean and good facilities/showers/washrooms pot washing, tidy site and helpful friendly staff.

不喜欢: Could do with more gravel to lessen the mud situation when ground is saturated. No waste point for toilet emptying.

喜欢: Lovely site, first impressions when walked into the pub was how friendly and welcoming. Location was amazing for the dogs, great for Off lead walks and only 10mims into Bakewell. The food in the Royal Oak was amazing!! Definitely will be back

喜欢: Absolutely amazing service great staff at the Royal Oak couldn’t do enough for us! Also the food was out of this world! Pretty views and locals walks close by! Can’t recommend enough Amazing! Clean toilets and showers and the shower room was so warm which was amazing no trying to get dressed in the cold. Staff were so helpful and friendly

People have lived in the Peaks for a very long time indeed, as you'll see for yourself at Arbor Low (10 minutes' drive), a prehistoric henge and Neolithic barrow on the White Peak plateau. After inspecting these ancient ruins, fast-forward a few dozen centuries and zip off to Haddon Hall (30 minutes) for a jaunt around an Elizabethan house and gardens. Next up, trips into town are in order. The town in question is very much up to you, and there's a fair bit of choice around here – options include sauntering around Buxton (15 minutes) and its Georgian terraces, heading to a showground event or sampling the puddings in Bakewell (15 minutes) and visiting Ashbourne (20 minutes), a market town full of varied independent shops. Kids (and adults, for that matter) who are fans of fluffy animals can take a trip to Mayfield Alpacas Animal Park (35 minutes), while those who prefer more urban explores can be taken to Sheffield (45 minutes), where bowling, indoor climbing or a visit to the National Videogame Museum should do the trick.
