If you’ve been spending too much time stressing in front of a computer, you might well be in need of a break from all modern trappings. Cue Stanley Lodge Farm, a tiny wild-camping site on a family smallholding in the Derbyshire countryside, a five-minute drive from the village of Tideswell. What makes this spot so suited to anyone in need of rest and relaxation? Well, it’s an adults-only site, for starters, which means zero chance of being stirred from your slumber by screaming children. Dogs are not allowed, either, so no barking wake-up calls; and guests are kindly requested not to play loud music. These are all pretty good credentials for a peaceful break, you’ll no doubt agree… A path runs right past the site, so you can explore the immediate surroundings on foot, perhaps heading to Eyam (about one hour’s walk), a small village with a museum, a craft centre and a sculpture garden. There are a couple of pubs within a half-hour walk, in case you get parched on your hike. And of course, you’re right in the middle of Peak District National Park here, with its hilly hikes, caverns and reservoirs. There is a unisex portable toilet on site and a drinking water tap, but not much else. Well… there are resident horses, but please resist the temptation to share your carrots with them – they are not to be fed.

喜欢 Everything; it was a beautiful, clean, quiet field to stay in with a convenient portaloo to use if needed. I enjoyed myself so much I invited a friend to come and stay the next evening and we sat with a fire watching the sunset from outside our tent, what more could you want?

不喜欢 NOTHING; I myself struggled to find the site initially. If you head down the public bridle path the field is clearly marked, it’s just fusing that bridle path that I struggled with personally. I called the owner who quickly directed me to the correct place so no issues at all

喜欢 Loved that it was small, quiet (except for some other campers, but I like dead silence), basic amenities and no kids.
Got one night to myself which was absolute perfection.
Loads of pretty places to walk and stunning places to visit nearby in the car.
Lovely watching the horses playing in the morning and so many birds.

不喜欢 Only that once I get a dog I won't be able to stay here again 😅

喜欢 Stayed for two nights and we were the only ones on the field. The spot was easy to find and up on the hills so was very peaceful and the sunset views were gorgeous. The portaloo was also very clean, with paper and antibac gel provided.

不喜欢 The field is quite bumpy in patches, so was a little hard to find a good spot to pitch up, but as we were the only ones this was fine.

喜欢 Great space, only us and one other tent when we stayed so very peaceful and quiet, toilet was spotless and had hand sanitiser which was great. Had a lovely time

不喜欢 Would be helpful if there was a sign for the bottom of the road, there are two roads coming off Trot ln, one goes to a farm Stanley moor farm and the other has a no through road sign, that’s the one you’ll need! We struggled to find it and had no service in the area so took a bit of driving around!

喜欢 Loved the atmosphere - quiet, basic, farm animals around, not much going on. Nice walk through fields and to cressbrook dale. Portaloo was clean. Quick drive to cafe in the morning for proper coffee. Tap for water on site. Good communication from host.

喜欢 Me and my friends enjoyed the views and the quiet little plot of land. Perfect amount of space, portable toilet on site as-well. Good value for money and easy to find!

不喜欢 There’s nothing really to dislike but if i had to say one thing is that there’s nothing really in walking distance around the area but that’s nothing to do with the owners of the campsite.

A stone building on the edge of the village of Eyam houses the Eyam Museum (10 minutes’ drive), which illustrates how the local community managed to contain an outbreak of the plague in 1665 by self-isolating. The opulent Painted Hall at Chatsworth House (20 minutes) impresses with its chequered marble floor, splendidly colourful ceiling and gilded balconies. Other highlights at this 17th-century stately home include an oak-panelled room, plus a garden with statuary and water features. Head into Sheffield (45 minutes) to learn all there is to know about the local steel industry at the Kelham Island Museum, on the River Don. There are more steel exhibits at the Millennium Gallery, or you might decide to catch a snooker championship game at the Crucible Theatre (or a show, if snooker’s not on).
