Peruse all the Pyrénées has to offer then potter back towards Ferme La Ramière for pool dips and peaceful rests – this Béarn park is set in alpine Pyrénées-Atlantiques countryside on a big farm with views of Aquitane’s southern peaks.
Animals are plentiful here too: cows and ponies roam freely around the grounds (much to the delight of smaller guests, who’ll also appreciate the foosball and table tennis facilities). For the grownups, regional treats like wine, honey, jam and cold cuts can be picked up from a small shop on site.
If you’re transforming said ingredients into lunch or dins, a shared kitchen is on hand and a common area serves as a handy base for dining inside if the weather’s not up to much. In the warmer months, you can buy baked bits and bobs from the boulangerie delivery that comes every morning; otherwise; a supermarket over in Louvie-Juzon (less than a 10-minute drive away) is a local option for picking up more fodder.
The touring’s as topnotch as the fare in this region, with hikes in the north western part of the Pyrénées close by. Trekking and mountain bike trails can be set off on around the Ossau valley a 10-minute drive away, while the Oloron-Sainte-Marie watersports centre is where to head for kayaking and rafting on the Gave D’Oloron and Gave d'Aspe rivers. Meanwhile, Escot (45 minutes) is just the spot for canyoning and La Pierre Saint Martin (an hour and 20) is a stellar skiing hub.

If kids can’t get enough of the pool on site, upgrade to an even wetter experience with submerges at the Aqua Béarn park (40 minutes’ drive) where bobbing in lazy rivers and on water toboggans is par for the course. Adults, on the other hand, might prefer hot-water immersion at the spa town of Bagnères-de-Bigorre an hour and 15 minutes from the site.
Whichever aquatic activity you choose, get dried off and make your way towards Pau next, a Pyrenees city with stunning mountain views. You can mosey on over to the medieval monument of the Château de Pau here for a national museum that’s one of France’s most visited and settle in for further culture at the Pavillon des Arts exhibition space.
