The Costa Blanca’s Benidorm requires little introduction: it’s renowned for its sandy Mediterranean beaches and fun family activities including water parks and amusement rides. Add to this mix a thick slice of luxury at Kampaoh Playa de Levante, and you have the basis of a very successful family holiday under (rather smart) canvas. The pre-erected tents at this glampsite have all sorts of facilities to make your time in the sun as chilled as possible. Bed linen, towels and storage for your gear come as part of the package, while outside your tent is a small, private picnic area shaded by trees. As if having Playa de Levante beach five minutes’ drive away wasn’t enough, on-site facilities include two swimming pools – one with a deck for lazing in the sun, and the other dedicated to family fun. By day, play tennis, volleyball or pétanque, and let the kids have fun on the swings – and there’s organised entertainment to keep the whole tribe entertained in the evening too. No need to fret about cooking, as there’s a terrace restaurant specialising in regional paella dishes and a cafeteria for quick snacks. Keep the kids happy with ice creams bought from the on-site supermarket, which also sells beach essentials like goggles and liloes.

You’re certainly not short of things to do in the locality. The glampsite is near Rincón de Loix (10 minutes’ drive), the liveliest area of Benidorm and home to adrenaline-pumping rides at Aqualandia amusement park. Directly next door is Mundomar, where kids can have their photo taken with sea lions and commune with talkative parrots. More family fun is had at Terra Mítica (20 minutes), a classically themed complex with rides and slides for all levels of bravery. Play beach volleyball or swim in gentle waves off the well-known Playa de Levante (five minutes), which is backed by tiki bars, cafés and high-rise hotels, or bag a parasol and lounge in the sun on Cala del Mal Pas (15 minutes) cove. Both beaches are safe swimming spots supervised by lifeguards in summer. Up the activity levels with a hike along rocky trails overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean in Parque Natural de la Serra Gelada (15 minutes), or turn inland to explore the forested Coll de Pouet hiking area (40 minutes). If you’re up for more natural beauty, book a guided tour of Canelobre Caves (also 40 minutes) to marvel at dramatic limestone formations in deep underground caverns.
