Take your bike or your walking skills to the hundreds of kilometres' worth of paths around here, such as around the thick Sellingen forests, along the banks of the Ruiten Aa, or around the Paasberg/Easter Mountain nature reserve at the nearby small city of Terborg. Also within biking distance is Fort Bourtange, the 16th-century star fort on the road between Germany and the city of Groningen, well worth the ride to see the well-preserved buildings around its four and a half hectares of pentagon. Or pedal to the Ter Apel Monastery, the only rural Middle Ages monastery left in the Netherlands and the only one in the Groningen and Friesland region to come through the Reformation in good condition. Taking to the car, the adventure theme park and zoo of Wildlands (previously known as Emmen Zoo) is a 35-minute drive away, and Sögel's Clemenswerth Palace and the town of Leer are both within half an hour.
