When what you need is a day of pampering, make a beeline for Bagno di Romagna (40 minutes’ drive) and relax in its therapeutic mineral waters. If you have enough energy for sightseeing, you’ll be mightily spoiled for cultural days out; the hilltop village of Bertinoro (20 minutes) is rightly known as the ‘balcony of Romagna’ thanks to its views over the countryside from the central Piazza della Libertà, overlooked by a majestic 10th-century citadel. Gorgeous UNESCO-listed Ravenna (50 minutes) is packed with history: try to see the Byzantine mosaics in the basilicas of San Vitale and Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, Museo Dante and the poet’s tomb next to San Francesco Basilica. You can also venture to landlocked San Marino (around an hour) to admire Emilia-Romagna views from Mount Titano and the triumvirate of hilltop medieval fortresses that once protected the mini-republic. If a day on the beach sounds tempting, you can be on the Romagna Riviera in about 40 minutes by car. A popular choice is the 15-km sandy stretch around Rimini (50 minutes), where you can find lidos and chiringuito food shacks, or peaceful spots for watching the sunset. If you like a little more action, take out pedal boats at Gatteo Mare beach (45 minutes), or dance until late at Milano Marittima (50 minutes) waterside clubs.
