Just mighty pretty... in a mighty pretty Manche setting. And mighty handy too: Camping Les Îles is 15 minutes' drive from the English Channel and the Normandy coast at Granville, for easy access to the Chausey Islands and the Channel Islands as well as boating and fishing from the town's famed port. Even closer to this scenic base, Les Îles is a peaceful wildlife haven in Lower Normandy countryside, surrounded by pastures, woodland and farmland wanders and bike rides, and a few minutes' walk from the Manche commune and shops of Hudimesnil. But there's no need to leave the site at all should you wish to ditch the car while here: Les Îles is stuffed with services and facilities to keep you sorted, from entertainment day and night to fresh bread sales every morning. The centre of the site is its spectacular heated pool area, with indoor and outdoor splashing, a paddling pool, waterslides and Jacuzzi and hydromassage seats; there's also a fab playground with trampolines and bouncy castle for smaller guests, and an array of active options available at the multisports and pétanque courts. If you'd like to take things down a notch – perhaps recommended after a few hours of sportiness – take the kids along to the mini farm to meet and greet the donkeys and other furry inhabitants, or amble around the nearby lake for peaceful wanders. Essentials are fully sorted too, at the bar and restaurant for eats and drinks all the day long, the grocery shop for foodie supplies and those fresh bread sales, and the snack bar and pizzeria for light bites and takeaways. There's also a library and tourist info on site, international newspaper sales, and an excellent range of amenities including a launderette, heated toilet blocks and disabled-access bathrooms.

If you do venture off site, Normandy beaches and the seaside resort of Granville are a short drive away, and famed destinations such as Mont Saint-Michel and Saint-Malo within an hour to an hour and a half for day trips. Granville is a must: take time for a proper potter around its marina and fishing port, followed by a stroll on the sandy beach and a chancy look at the town casino. Granville's also known for the Christian Dior Museum at the Villa les Rhumbs, and as a starting point for boat trips far and wide: the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight and the Scilly Isles of Cornwall can all be reached from here. For a family day, the 50+ species, mini farm and play areas of Zoo de Champrepus are 20 minutes' drive away.
