If pedalling along a zipwire suspended across a vast forested chasm is your idea of a good time, check out Parque Extremo El Peñón Guane (10 minutes’ drive), where you can do exactly that. There are also regular ziplines here, plus bungee jumping and other adrenaline-filled activities. Voted ‘the most beautiful village in Colombia’, Barichara sits on the edge of a canyon – which means spectacular views from its several ‘miradors’, or observation decks. Stroll among the well-preserved colonial centre, and stop at the Barichara Paper Workshop to buy handcrafted paper products. Socorro (45 minutes) is another pretty colonial town. Dating from the late 18th century, the Basilica of Our Lady of Help has an elegant interior, with huge chandeliers, stone columns and colourful stained-glass windows.
