Campsite of the week: eco-camp, Oban

Isle of Lismore Small doesn’t have to mean few facilities, as this week’s featured site, eco-camp on the Isle of Lismore, shows. There are just five carefully selected pitches here, but the site owners offer a full laundry service, will deliver home-cooked food (and wine) to your tent, set a tent up for you for arrival and offer bike, kayak and private cinema hire. ‘As well as any special touches you can think of’, they add.

As you’d expect from the name, eco-camp has loads of green credentials – there are compost toilets, sustainable wood for heating, solar showers and natural spring water on tap. The pitches are all set in a wildflower meadow, and there’s also a communal campfire area to meet other campers. Dogs are allowed on site and student groups are welcome.

The Isle of Lismore is one of the more accessible of the Argyll islands and just a seven mile car ferry ride from Oban and a five-minute crossing by passenger ferry from Port Appin. For a small island, there’s plenty to do – the island’s heritage museum and public hall regularly runs events from ceilidhs to theatre, and there are two pubs within a mile and a half of the campsite.

Tent pitches are £11 per night for a grass pitch for two adults, with no extra charge for an awning, gazebo or pup tent and up to two dogs. A ‘rent a tent’ pitch for up to three people is £18, with unlimited cars included.
