Roquebrune-sur-Argens (10 minutes' drive) is where to go locally for self-powered inland paddles: head to La Base Du Rocher by the bridge to mess about for a while in a canoe or kayak on the peaceful river Argens. If you're more drawn to an artsy spot by the sea, you're also within striking distance of Port Tonic Art Center (20 minutes), where you can chat with the artists in residence and admire their work in a spectacular seaside location. Sticking with the creative theme, you might like to head along the Côte d'Azur towards Antibes (45 minutes) to admire its Picasso museum or splendid Le Nomade statue, both of which are a short walk away from the bars and seafood restaurants of the old port. Similarly swanky towns like Nice (55 minutes) and Monaco (an hour and 15 minutes) are also easily doable as day trips. Although a whole world away from swish jet set haunts, you should also take the time to head inland to natural beauty spots like the Gorges de Pennafort (15 minutes), where you can admire remarkable rock formations or fish in the river. Finally, for subterranean explores, set your sights on the Grotte Saint-Michel caves and its underground chapel (30 minutes).
