Whatever floats your boat, make your way to Milton Keynes for a myriad of entertainment and shopping options: there are regular big-scale gigs at the National Bowl, the good-sized Milton Keynes Theatre for thesps, and music venues for jazz, rock, folk and blues – try The Stables for a melting pot of most musical genres and The Pitz Centre for punk and metal. Cryptic types can puzzle things out at Bletchley Park, and binary sorts should like the National Museum of Computing with its working replica of the Colossus computer. Going further back, the Milton Keynes Museum has the Stacey Hill Collection of rural life from before Milton Keynes was developed. Leighton Buzzard, between Milton Keynes and Luton over the border in Bedfordshire, is where the Grand Union Canal was opened and is a short drive from The Old Dairy Farm. For sightseeing and events, the Leighton Buzzard Railway runs through the spring, summer and autumn, with Santa specials running in December. Film buffs can look out for the settings used in The Great Train Robbery, which happened just outside the town at Ledburn, while for golfers there’s the Leighton Buzzard Golf Club where guests can play during the week; grab a membership for weekends. Walkers and nature spotters can stroll around Stockgrove Country Park between Milton Keynes and Leighton Buzzard, or carve out a path on the chalky Chiltern Hills, most of which are based in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. For a literally breath-taking experience, clamber to the top of the two highest Chiltern hills in Buckinghamshire: Combe Hill, with its iconic landmark the Combe Hill Memorial commemorating Buckinghamshire men who died in the Second Boer War, and the Wendover Woods-covered Haddington Hill.
