Skip off to Slovenia’s lakes – famed Lake Bled and its medieval castle are about 20 minutes’ drive away, and its larger cousin Lake Bohinj around half an hour away for walks, swims, kayaking, horse riding and wandering around traditional alpine villages. There’s great hiking in the hills around Bled too – for a gentle route, take the Straža ascent, known for having the best south-eastern vista over Lake Bled; at the top is Adventure Park Bled, a treetop adventure course with ziplines, Tarzan swings and high ropes courses. During summer you can go sledding down the hill's slopes, while in winter you can swoosh back down on skis. For splendid scenery, it’s also worth paying a visit to Vintgar Gorge (15 minutes) which has several waterfalls (including the tallest in Slovenia), pools and rapids, as well as an educational trail across wooden bridges to a point overlooking the Šum waterfall. Leave the lakes behind and plan a day out in Ljubljana (half an hour), hitting the hilltop castle and the pretty Triple Bridge, musing over the colourful works at the museum of modern art and seeking snacks at the central market.
