Looking for an active Dutch holiday in green surrounds? In scenic Overijssel and less than five minutes' drive from Nieuw Heeten, Vakantiepark Sallandshoeve has heaps of activities for all the family. On the edge of the handsome expanse of heath, forest and fen that is the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park, this site also makes a great base for nature-filled jaunts on foot or two wheels (with bikes hired on site should you wish). A 10-minute drive lands visitors at De Holterberg, whose natural history museum and eateries come highly recommended. Here, guests can join the long-distance Pieterpad trail and set off on far-flung adventures (no judgement if you don't choose to tackle all its 498 kilometres in one go, however…). Those who prefer to stick closer to home may well fancy teeing off at the on-site miniature golf course, challenging new friends to a game of footie or ping pong, or zooming about the site on hired go-karts. If you need to cool off after all that, pass a few hours at the indoor pool, unwind on the snack bar's terrace or take the kids down to the sandy play pond. Vakantiepark Sallandshoeve is equally nifty from a practical point of view: wifi is available here, there's a restaurant on site and a well-stocked local shop in Nieuw Heeten is a five-minute drive away.

The Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park has a handy visitor centre that can be reached in under 15 minutes by car, so head here for tips on the tracks and trails that crisscross this wildlife hub. Strolling through these peaceful parts, you might stumble upon the Holten Canadian War Cemetery (10 minutes' drive). For kid-pleasing trips, drive 15 minutes to local theme park Avonturenpark Hellendoorn for antics in the company of the park's ursine mascots Baba and Bella. Budding palaeontologists might want to make tracks for Dinoland Zwolle (35 minutes), where fearsome beasts can be found among the trees; for more fun-sized critters, check out Apenheul, an ape rescue centre where formerly caged primates roam free (35 minutes). The Overijssel region is full of history too: towns around these parts were once part of the Hanseatic League, and modern visitors will see many examples of the wealth generated by this mercantile past. Kasteel Het Nijenhuis (a manor house, museum and sculpture garden) is 20 minutes away by road, while nearby Deventer (20 minutes) and Apeldoorn (35 minutes) are treasure troves of medieval and early-modern architecture.
