You can venture out straight from the campsite on hiking and cycling trips in Maremma Regional Park, or join guided treks through the wetlands, dunes and heathland on foot, e-bike and horseback, or by canoe down the waterways. Sitting on its bluff of tufa stone, medieval Pitigliano (25 minutes’ drive) centres around the landmark Rocca degli Aldobrandeschi fort, and is well-worth a day spent exploring its ornate Baroque cathedral, stellar art museum and the Etruscan finds in the Museo Civico Archeologico di Pitigliano. There are more Etruscan remains at the Necropoli Etrusca del Puntone (15 minutes), while a soak in the natural hot springs at Saturnia (20 minutes) makes a relaxing side trip to wind up the day. When the seaside is calling, you can be on the beach at Albinia in 45 minutes; if chilling in the sun is not for you, hotfoot it to Oasi WWF Naturale di Orbetello (also 45 minutes) to watch pink flamingos stalking through the salt-water lagoons. Still down on the coast, drive over the narrow spit of land to Monte Argentario (an hour and 10 minutes) to swim in clear seas and potter around the chic resort of Porto Santo Stefano.
