Destination Ailleurs is a Mongolian-inspired site on the edge of the village of Éoulx in southeast France. The accommodation here comes in all sorts of styles and set-ups, but each unit comes with a private bathroom for extra easy facilities access. Also of note is the fact that this eco-conscious site harvests 100% of its running water from a natural spring and is surrounded by trees, flowers and other nature-packed nooks and crannies.
Want some wide-angle views of the surrounding scenery? Head up to the terrace for an alfresco breakfast with vistas over the hills. While a fresh morning meal's always a top way to hit the ground running, folk in search of food will want to book in for a hot, home-cooked meal or two at the owners' table (depending on the menu, dinner can also be dropped off at your door). Cooking your own? Swoop down to Castellane (20 minutes) to stock up on provisions.
As for on-site ents, there's little chance you'll be short of things to do. The kids can sneak a peek at the site's goats and chickens or take themselves off for games of ping pong and a spell on the trampoline; grownups may prefer a genteel game of pétanque or a soak in the hot tub to give a boost to their circulation and soothe sore muscles (extra charges apply).

Destination Ailleurs is in a prime position for a lot of things, but the open-air explores to be had in the surrounding hills are really something special – the GR 4 passes through La Garde (10 minutes' drive) if you're up for high-altitude hikes, while shorter strolls can be had along some of the prettiest bits of the Gorges du Verdon on the Sentier Blanc-Martel (an hour).
Carry yourself off to Castellane (20 minutes) for further sporty times (take your pick from kayaking, rafting and canyoning) or, for those who fancy a break from physical exertion, to peruse the town's speciality museums (nature, the Resistance and Citroën each have an exhibition of their own).
Lakeside lounging on the wish list too? The emerald-green Lac de Chaudanne (20 minutes) and Lac de Castillon (25 minutes) are both within easy reach – the former is home to scaly carp and tasty trout that can be caught (in season and with a licence, bien sûr), while the latter has a brill bathing beach at Saint-André-les-Alpes (45 minutes).
