This is said to be one of the sunniest areas in the whole of France – and while the weather can't be guaranteed, there should be plenty of good times in the forecast for those staying at Camping de la Grange au Maire. This small family-run campsite is in the southern Deux-Sèvres, in the centre of the four departments that make up the Poitou-Charentes, and there's lots for all the family to do and see. The site is in sleepy countryside but just a handy 10 minutes’ drive from the N10 motorway, making it a handy stopover point on journeys to or from the south of France or into Spain. It's also close to the three main airports of Poitiers, Limoges and La Rochelle, which are all within a 90-minute drive. What to expect on site? Spacious grass pitches have parking by your accommodation and access to refurbished showers with a shaver point and hair drier, a washing-up area and a chemical toilet disposal point. Also useful are the 16-amp electric hook-ups for all the pitches. Pitches are within fully enclosed grounds behind large gates and hedges, ensuring that your stay will be a peaceful, secure and secluded one for everybody, especially the children. A communal room has a selection of books and a large selection of DVDs to borrow on any days when the weather’s not cooperating. There is also a dartboard, table tennis (please ask the team for this one) and a games table with table football, skittles and air hockey. Please note, if you're arriving late on Saturdays or after midday on Sunday, there are no shops open in the area, so make sure you stock up before you arrive. The local supermarket is in Sauzé-Vaussais (five minutes’ drive).

Nous y avons passé 3 nuits avec voiture et caravane.
Petit camping de 10 emplacements spacieux.
Piscine agréable et propre.
Les sanitaires sont propres et bien entretenus, avec une douche spacieuse et des toilettes pour les personnes âgées.
Propriétaires sympathiques et serviables.
Convient également parfaitement aux motards.

Gostou My dad and I stayed here in mid-March during our first trip to the Continent in our camper van. We received a warm welcome from the owner and it was quickly clear he'd invested considerable time, effort and thought into his site. We had all the facilities we needed and very much enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the rural site.

Being a bit of a newbie to the world of camper vans/motor homes (use whichever one you prefer - I understand some people can get fussy!) I underestimated the weight of my van and managed to get bogged down in some damp grass. The owner couldn't do enough to help us and we were quickly set up on some firmer ground.

I'd love to return again, perhaps closer to the summer next time!

Gostou The campsite is in a beautiful quiet rural location. Jo and Chris were so friendly and helpful. We arrived in freezing fog fairly late at night but they were straight out to show us around. The facilities were very clean and the showers lovely and hot! Very welcome in late December. We also really appreciated the community room.

We hope to come back in the summer!!

Gostou Tent pitches very good, it rained a lot but the ground drained well, toilet and shower facilities were clean. Lovely quiet little spot. Would be nice to go back in better weather.

There’s so much to do within an hour’s drive of the site. If you’re holidaying with the kids, head for Futuroscope (55 minutes’ drive) for a day on its immersive 4D rides, dancing with robots and playgrounds for younger kids. La Vallée des Singes (half an hour) is the place for feeding sessions with free-roaming monkeys and the chance to see silverback gorillas, while DéfiPlanet' (an hour) has a petting zoo and treetop rope courses. In the walled city of Angoulême (50 minutes), there are comic-book museums to poke around and 30 giant cartoon murals spread across the city. When you’re done with culture, there’s a manmade beach at Nautilis, along with indoor and outdoor pools and paddling pools for toddlers. If you fancy a day at the real thing, the sandy shores of historic La Rochelle are an hour and a half away on the Atlantic coast. Closer to base camp, at Ruffec Rejallant Canoë Kayak (25 minutes), families can kayak down the Charente River to the historic town of Verteuil-sur-Charente and its château.
