If you’re looking to get far, far away from everybody, you’ve in the right place. Pitch up at Les Pieds sur Terre, le Nez dans les Haies, la Tête dans les Étoiles, and chances are your only neighbours will be cows and ponies, for here you’re deep in the Sarthe countryside, where you can kick back, wake up to birdsong and doze off accompanied by the croaking of frogs. This site is not your typical tourist site, as it involves camping in the owner's garden. There’s little traffic hereabouts, but that’s not to say the site is isolated. An easy 10 minutes’ drive from the A28 motorway, it’s near the rural village of Ballon-Saint-Mars (five minutes), where you can pick up local produce in the market, fetch your daily baguette from the bakery or have a sundowner at the local bar. At your disposal at the campsite is a flat expanse of camping field, partially shaded by mature trees and lined with hedges. Take advantage of the communal picnic table on warm days, rustle up a barbecue (firewood is available on site) or huddle up around the campfire to watch the dark skies glitter with stars on clear nights. If the weather should turn against you, there’s a small communal chalet for shelter, and another larger room in the same block as the shower facilities. Now back to those birds. During your time on this sustainably run site – carefully managed by Ludovic with eco-diversity in mind – hopefully you’ll get to see and hear robins, magpies, blackbirds, woodpeckers, jays and nightingales.

Gostou What a hidden gem! I think we were never on a campsite where is so much care for every detail. From the moment we booked, Ludovic was so friendly untill we left. When we arrived he had a cold beer in the fridge and a Little snack to welcome us. Also the campsite is so lovely, with herbs and you can even make a Little campfire. A wonderfull outdoor and indoor shower. A Place we would love to come back to and stay longer.

Gostou Lovely small peaceful site on Ludovic's farm. The site was very well equipped with a games/sitting room, a large fridge and freezer for guests to use and dish washing facilities. The toilet and shower was clean and lots of hot water in the shower.
Ludovic was very friendly and welcoming and showed us around the site. He left 2 cold beers in the fridge for arrival. He checked on us each day to make sure we were okay. As we left the site he gave us a large bag of walnuts from his tree as a gift. He is a lovely guy, he made our short stay wonderful. Thank you Ludovic, we will definitely stay again.

Gostou Byla jsem extrémně spokojená od začátku až do konce, co se týká komunikace s Ludovicem, majitelem kempu. Kemp je krásný, uprostřed přírody, zcela klidný, měli jsme krásné soukromí. Jsou tu dvě sprchy, dvě toalety, společenská místnost s velkou lednicí, sedačkou, stolem, židlemi, můžete si zahrát šipky. Venku si můžete udělat barbecue. Majitel nás přivítal, ukázal nám co kde je, zodpověděl všechny naše dotazy. Příjezd i odjezd není časově limitován, což nám velmi vyhovovalo. Opravdu skvělé jednání, kterého si velmi cením.

Gostou Ludovic is the perfect host.
The campsite is very peaceful and natural.
Plenty of room.
A large Fridge / Freezer is available to use.
We spotted a Turtle Dove which is very rare in the UK.
A composting toilet is available if you prefer.
Ludovic provides BBQ's and charcoal for use by his guests.
Level pitches suitable for Caravans, Motor homes or tents.
Good 5G signal from my provider.

Gostou A perfect start to our holiday was the personal greeting from Ludovic the owner. He showed us around the 9 pitch site including the communal building which held a fridge freezer, microwave and sink area. We were the only visitors that day. One loo was inside with a compost loo on the outside of the building. Two excellent showers also present. The hedge rowed site was located in a peaceful area of fields of wheat and maize. The raspberry, blackcurrant and herb garden was free for us to harvest. A good spot away from Le Mans which was the reason why we were there.

There’s certainly plenty to do outdoors; you’ll need a licence to fish in the Orne Saônoise river (10 minutes’ drive), where you can also hire kayaks or canoes for a paddle downstream. Other alfresco pursuits include hiking, mountain biking and horse-riding trails, all on way-marked tracks close to the campsite. If you’re staying local, combine exercise with a potter around the verdant parkland at the Donjon de Ballon (five minutes), and explore the once-fortified medieval chateau itself if you’re visiting in summer. Another historic building to check out nearby is the peaceful Royal Abbey of Epau (half an hour), known for the beauty of its Cistercian architecture and stained-glass windows. And of course a visit to Le Mans (35 minutes) should be considered too. You might be lucky enough to hit town when the famed annual 24-hour car race is on (in June), but this is a historic place with plenty to enthral any time of year. You can see remains of the Gallo-Roman walls, stroll by half-timbered houses within the Old Town and get your fill of vintage sports cars in the interactive Museum of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
