Do you dream of a safari experience above the treetops? Head to Toubies Glamping, a four-acre site in the Midi-Pyrénées region in the south of France.
On the edge of Ariege National Park and in the foothills of the Pyrenees, Toubies Glamping’s safari lodge tents are well placed for forays into nature, and eagle-eyed safari enthusiasts can take to trails that run through the surrounding oak forests to get close to wild deer and other animals.
Hoping to just switch off during your stay? Swing all your stresses away in a hammock under the trees and let the kids get their energy out on the tree swings. Take a dip in the pool, then unwind completely in the hot tub at the top of the meadow.
Each safari lodge tent at Toubies Glamping is fully self contained, with a kitchen area, bathroom and two bedrooms. In the evenings, take in the spectacular views over the forest to the mountains in the distance from the comfort of your private deck, or sit around the firepit outside your tent for a spot of stargazing.
Toubies is a 30-minute walk from Saint-Croix-Volvestre, where you can stock up on supplies, try your hand at boules, or take a night off from cooking with a visit to the bar and restaurant. A farmer's market is held on Saturdays at Saint-Girons.

For those craving a bit of city life, Toubies Glamping is roughly an hour’s drive from Toulouse, where you can get a taste of history with visits to the natural history museum and the 18th-century Place du Capitole palace. Wannabe astronauts can blast off to Cité de l’espace, where they can learn how to be an astronaut, see inside a spaceship and get up close with objects from space.
Closer at hand, guests can venture into Ariège Pyrenees Regional Nature Park and its numerous waymarked trails to tackle by foot, by bike or on horseback. River sports and paragliding are available here too if you'd like to test your mettle further.
If you're still feeling adventurous, dive below ground to explore the prehistoric caves at Mas d’Azil (less than 30 kilometres from Toubies) or the underground river at Rivière souterraine de Labouiche (less than 50 kilometres away), both within the park.
Other options include a trip to Saint-Lizier, to visit the bishops' palace and see the Romanesque frescoes in the 11th-century cathedral, or an amble around the art galleries of Carla Bayle, a cultured spot where there's also live music most evenings. Both towns are within 35 minutes.
