If you’re venturing in the direction of Valras-Plage, it’s a safe bet to assume you’re in search of some combo of beaches, watersports, coastal walks, sea-breeze bike rides and outings to keep the kids happy. All such things can easily be on the schedule during stays at Le Mas des Lavandes – a handy Hérault location 1.5 kilometres from the centre of the resort means easy access to the sands and all sorts of activities (paddleboarding, waterskiing, go-karting and treetop clambering among them), and also to plenty of restaurants and shops to sort all your eats both out and about and back at base. A shuttle service runs from outside the site in summer, or you can hire bikes to pedal to town. But… you’re on holiday, and a certain amount of time spent relaxing on site wouldn’t go amiss. Pick your spot and settle in, safe in the knowledge there’s a good pile of facilities here to keep even the wriggliest of kids (and/or partners) busy: playgrounds, table tennis, a multisports ground and courts for volleyball and pétanque are all provided, and the summer activity list includes those specially set up for tiddlers and evenings of cabaret and karaoke. Among all this, eats can be had at the restaurant or whipped up with supplies from the mini market. The highlight of the place, however, has to be the splendid waterpark – a huge 2300m² of space that includes a heated swimming pool, a swimming river, slides and a paddling pool, along with a hot tub and deckchairs for those tasked with keeping an eye on lengthy splashing sessions.

Hire those bikes on site (or bring some along) and it’s not just trips into town that beckon – locals also recommend taking cycles out along the banks of the Canal du Midi (10 kilometres away), or accessing the bike path 150 metres from the site to pedal to the beach and along the coast path. When you hit the beach in Valras-Plage there’s plenty of sandy space to sprawl out on, plus paddleboarding, pedaloes, kayaking and other water-based activities to try out. For a change of seaside scenery, pedal for 20 minutes (or walk for an hour) through a nature reserve to get to the beach in the neighbouring resort of Sérignan-Plage. Trips along the coast might also take you further to more water-based days at Aqualand waterpark (half an hour’s drive), the canals and lagoon of Sète (40 minutes) or nips of the local tipple at the House of Noilly-Prat (half an hour). If you’ve got eyes on staying closer to base, there’s an adventure park and go-kart track 20 minutes’ walk away.
