Set off to the Seine-et-Marne department and you can do just that at Chez Jo et Mel - Les Temps Perchés, where a handful of pitches overlook a small lake on a 20-hectare nature park. When you’ve had your fill of thrill rides at Disney (an hour’s drive), you can put your feet up and watch ducks, barnacle geese and wild swans on the water.
Because of all that wildlife, you're asked to keep it quiet when at your pitch, so as not to frighten the natives. In fact, this peaceful lakeside spot has a real wild camping vibe, so if you’re looking for lots of luxury and entertainment, it’s definitely not the place for you. Dry toilets are on hand, but there’s no electricity and no drinking water so you’ll have to bring torches and an independent supply of water.
Pick up foodie supplies in the supermarket and organic grocery shops of Soisy-Bouy (five minutes’ drive), or head for medieval Provins (15 minutes) for takeaways and cosy auberge restaurants.
A couple of house rules: the owners ask that you respect the environment, so please take all your rubbish away with you. No chemicals are permitted so please don’t use chemical toilets, industrial soaps and non-biodegradable dishwashing liquids on the site.

Disneyland Paris (an hour’s drive) will likely be on every family's wish list for its Superman-themed rides, 4D simulators, parades and shows. But kids will also most likely have a brilliant time at Feline Park (10 minutes), where they can encounter endangered snow leopards and white tigers, walk through an aviary filled with friendly parrots and feed rescued lemurs.
How about heading for Paris (an hour by train) for the day? Go up the Eiffel Tower, take a boat trip along the River Seine or see art masterpieces in the Louvre. If that’s a little too far away, then gorgeous Provins (15 minutes’ drive) awaits, with its medieval walls and cobbled streets lined with half-timbered buildings. Learn about its history in the Musée de Provins et du Provinois, and watch raptor displays while you have a walk around the ramparts.
Active families might like to get out onto the water at So’Fun Village (half an hour) for jetskiing adventures, try wakeboarding on La Souricière Lake, or take a day boat along the river from Bray-sur-Seine (15 minutes).
