For splendid stays in close proximity to pretty villages, lengthy beaches and medieval towns, park up at Camping Le Gréarn, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive (about a kilometre and a half) from the Morbihan village of Ambon. This quiet site is in a most nifty spot about four kilometres from the sea and roughly 15 minutes from the Gulf of Morbihan, putting sprawling beaches at Damgan, Trehervé and Bétahon within 10 minutes’ drive, and jaunts to the Breton islands within easy reach. Landlubber days come highly recommended hereabouts too, with the medieval walled town of Vannes – and its aquarium, butterfly garden, cathedral and markets – a 25-minute drive from the site. If days free from travels appeal, stick around site to keep busy with football, volleyball, basketball, ping-pong and pétanque, or spend hours instead lounging by (or in) the heated indoor pool. Once appetites are worked up, the on-site snack bar should satisfy – this is also where guests can sort fresh bread needs every day. Prefer to handle eats solo? There’s a small shop in Ambon for picking up supplies, and guests can rent barbecues on site. Save some energy for sundown too – themed evenings are a regular occurrence at the site, so get warmed up for karaoke, dancing and pétanque tournaments, and prep for samplings of paella or mussels and fries.

Atrações locais

Make the most of proximity to the sea with explores of the nearby islands of Île d’Arz and Île-aux-Moines. The former is an archipelago of nine islands that can be reached by boat from Vannes (25 minutes’ drive away, with a 10-minute crossing), while the latter is the largest of the Morbihan islands and can be reached by boat from Port Blanc (35 minutes away, with a 30-minute crossing). Once back on solid ground, explores can turn to some of the spectacularly scenic spots nearby, starting with the stunning Rochefort-en-Terre (35 minutes' drive), where cobbled streets wind between stone buildings and out onto spacious squares. Hols not complete without tripping about at some gorgeous châteaux? The medieval Breton pile of Château de Suscinio is closest (20 minutes); a little further afield is the ruined 12th-century Château de Ranrouët (30 minutes) away, while those up for longer jaunts can visit the medieval Josselin Castle and its toy museum (50 minutes) and the Château de Comper and its Arthurian Centre (an hour and 10 minutes). Dive further back into the area’s past at Parc de Préhistoire de Bretagne and Kerhinet Historic Village, both within 40 minutes, or spend some time in the present at Branféré Zoo and botanical garden (20 minutes).
