Fancy spending a day or two close to base? You'll find plenty of local options here: kayaking up the Laïta is a joy when the weather is fine, as is heading across the river on the handy ferry that connects Le Pouldu to Guidel marina. Ice cream, anyone? For nearby explores on dry land, lace up your boots and head along the coast on the GR34 trail. Alternatively, make tracks for the ruined Cistercian abbey at Saint-Maurice (10 minutes' drive) or check out the local animal park (10 minutes). Quimperlé (20 minutes) is a hub for medieval art and architecture; if you're feeling peckish, make sure to add the town's artisan biscuit factory to your list. Head to Lorient (half an hour) for smashing seafood, the Port-Louis fort and the ferry to the nearby Île de Groix, a spectacular offshore wildlife haven (crossing time 50 minutes). Further afield, Vannes (one hour) is a must-see for anyone passing through the area around the Gulf of Morbihan. This walled town hosts several festivals throughout the year, while permanent attractions include a butterfly house and aquarium that make particularly kid-pleasing days out.
