Ensure lively stays by sorting hols at Camping Les Viviers, a family-friendly site on the spectacular Lège-Cap-Ferret peninsula, 10 minutes’ drive from the small Gironde town of Lège-Cap-Ferret, in Aquitaine. This forested site has a tip-top location on a peninsula between the sheltered Arcachon Basin and the wild Atlantic, five minutes from sandy beaches on the former and 20 minutes from lengthy sandy stretches on the latter. Proximity of beaches is an undeniable plus, but there’s no need to leave site for them. An on-site lake has its own beach for sunbathing, and is a prime spot for swimming, pedalos and kayaking. Too chilly for lake swims? The site has a sprawling pool complex with heated indoor and outdoor pools, paddling pools for the kids, and tons of water games to try out, not to mention zippy waterslides to zoom down. On days when staying dry appeals, families can keep active with kids’ clubs (from toddlers to teens), miniature golf, games on the multisports field, and rounds of pétanque and tennis, and by whiling away some time in the video games room. If a little pampering appeals, there’s an on-site hairdresser, so guests can be sure to look their best for eats in the bar-restaurant (quick bites can be had during the day at the snack bar). When a night off from the restaurant is craved, there’s a small shop and grocery store on site, and in-unit kitchenettes for cooking up a storm.

Active hols started on site can continue within easy reach – it’s less than half a kilometre from base to Parc de Loisirs du Four, where guests can swing about treetop courses, test strength on the climbing wall, and putt about on the miniature golf course, and a skatepark and golf course are handily close at hand too. When gazing across Arcachon Basin is inspiring thoughts of exploration, travel post haste to Bélisaire (15 minutes’ drive away) to make the 30-minute ferry crossing to Arcachon, where visitors have Victorian-style houses to view, oyster bars and seafood restaurants to frequent, and an aquarium to wander about. If travelling outside Arcachon is feasible, make Aqualand Bassin d’Arcachon waterpark, the Arcachon zoo and Dune de Pilat – the highest sand dune in Europe, with fab views and, at its foot, a host of bars and restaurants – absolute priorities. Venturing in the other direction, travel north to the Lacanau Océan resort (45 minutes) – Europe’s oldest surf club, home to surf schools and an annual pro competition – or make the hour’s drive to the spectacular city of Bordeaux for boat trips on the Garonne, châteaux, gardens and plenty of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
