Bopping around the Balkans on two wheels? You’ll surely need to factor in a trip to Sarajevo Camp by Tent for woodland stays 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of Bosnia and Herzegovina's capital city. With a secure place to put bikes and panniers under lock and key, this is a prime place for travellers on a cycling expedition in eastern Europe.
Off the saddle for a bit? Less than a 15-minute walk away is the Pegasos Centre for activities including horseback riding, hiking, rock climbing and trekking on 14 acres of land with views of Sarajevo. A restaurant here opens at the weekends serving local treats like homemade doughnuts, Bosnian pies and bean soups.
Fires are permitted at Sarajevo Camp by Tent – pick up dry wood from the ground in the forest or buy it from the staff – and set up your hammock on the wooden platform beneath the trees for comfy snoozes after warming up beside a big blaze.
And while wifi’s not available, a restaurant just outside the gates has internet to browse while trying local food… or you can have a bit of a digital detox and stick around on site to cook simple meals in the outdoor kitchen. A five-minute drive away are the supermarkets and restaurants of Dobroševići as well.
A focus on such an earth-saving mode of transport means it may not come as a surprise that this park keeps the environment in mind; it has a shower warmed by the sun as well as an eco-friendly toilet.

Once you’ve covered the nearby area turn your attention to Sarajevo, starting the trip on the outskirts (20 minutes away) and schooling yourself on Bosnia’s recent history at war tunnels last used when the city was under siege in 1993.
Step towards the centre next for the traditional Baščaršija Ottoman bazaar (35 minutes’ drive) or go back in time to another era of battles – to 1914 and the Latin Bridge where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot during the incident that sparked World War I. Yet another period of conflict’s covered with a jaunt towards former dictator Tito's Cold War bunker an hour and five minutes’ drive from the park.
If you’d rather keep things a little more lighthearted, whizz up in the sky via the Sarajevska žičara cable car (40 minutes) or hike to the Yellow Bastion for city views (also 40 minutes). Another place of interest is the Sarajevo Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track, a rather spooky abandoned destination also 40 minutes from the site.
