What might you possibly expect to find upon arrival at a site that has the word ‘garden’ in its name? Lots of well-kept grass pitches and trees for shade? Perhaps bonus points for access to a bit of natural water?
Well, you can put ticks by all of the above at Camping Village Gardenland, a spacious Shkodër district site surrounded by trees and fields a 20-minute stroll from the village of Barbullush. And those extra points for water features? Double tick for that, in fact, as the site’s on the banks of the Drin river and has a small lake for fishing or taking a freshwater dip.
Pitches here are part of a larger resort complex, so guests have access to the same services as their hotel-based counterparts, including a huge outdoor pool (one of the biggest in the entire country, in fact), bike hire, a playground and a dog-walking area. Eats and drinks are easy to come by here at most times of the day: the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and there are sweet treats galore at the bar area, which specialises in drinks and desserts (what a fine combo that is…)
And there are extra facilities set up especially for the folk out on the pitches too: here there’s access to a drinking water supply, a barbecue area and a toilet block with showers.

Start your Shkodër region travels with a wander around the city of the same name, 25 minutes’ drive north – it’s home to Rozafa Castle, one of the biggest castles in all of Albania, as well as being the jumping-off point for canoe or paddleboarding trips around Lake Skadar (half of which lies over the border in Montenegro).
After lake-based activities, there’s plenty more outdoorsy stuff to get stuff into: the Buna River-Velipoja Protected Landscape is 10 minutes’ drive away for walks and bike trails, and the Kunë-Vain-Tale Nature Park is 45 minutes away. For coastal wanders, head to Velipojë (40 minutes) for a sandy beach by the Adriatic Sea.
If you’re up for wandering a little further, head out to the 18th-century Ottoman Mes Bridge (45 minutes), the hilltop Neolithic fort in Drisht (50 minutes) or up into the mountains to visit the caves and forests around Razma (an hour and 25 minutes).
