Hafod Y Plas (which translates as ‘the centre of the mansion’) is a dog-friendly site that really does put you at the centre – not of a mansion, but of Holy Island, in western Wales. Getting here is dead easy: from Anglesey, just cross the Four Mile Bridge over the Cymyran Strait, and the site, which is part of a working farm, is just off the B4545, on the outskirts of the village of Rhoscolyn. But what does being at the centre of Holy Island mean, in practical terms? Well, first of all, you’re pretty close to the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path (you can join it at the Four Mile Bridge), a long-distance hiking trail that you can follow south, to the sheltered sandy beach at Traeth Llydan (about one hour’s walk). Alternatively, you can head to Trearddur Bay (five minutes’ drive) and walk along the rugged western shore of the island, going past beaches like Porth Diana Beach and Porth Castell (both popular for watersports) and the natural arch at Bwa Gwyn. In addition to pitches on a well-maintained, level field, the site has a play area with slides and climbing structures, though children might be more interested in making friends with the resident animals – and in getting a hands-on taste of farm life, by helping to collect freshly laid eggs or milk the gentle cows. For food and drinks, the site has vending machines stocked with local produce and an ice cream van selling ice cream produced on site. On Thursday nights, a local burger van also visits the site. On site, there is also a toilet/shower block, a washing-up area and a freezer for your supplies, which you can source from Trearddur Bay or Holyhead (10 minutes).

Gostou Had so much potential if the wind wasn’t there. Facility was lovely and so clean.

Não gostou Sadly we got bad weather to the point where the wind wasn’t so strong it blew a few of the tents on the pitch over.

Also paid for milkshake machine wasn’t working.

Lovely campsite which is run by super friendly people. Great location…

Gostou Loved the location, was barely any time to the beach. Beautiful walks close by. Farm is well kept and all the animals are great to watch, especially at feeding time. Stayed in a tent and had no issues at all. Toilet block was amazing and clean and the kitchen area was brilliant, not often a campsite has a microwave, fridge and freezer you can use! Milkshake machine was fantastic and cleaned regularly, milk was so fresh. Also a coffee machine on site which was a godsend! Beautiful views of the night sky and saw so many stars. Campsite owners were lovely and very welcoming. Will definitely be back again!

Gostou Good location, and quiet site with no road noise or rowdy campers etc. The pony is cool and the dogs were nice.

Não gostou Picthes were not level at all. Facilities were very poor in our opinion. Water smelt funny and poorly constructed and cleaned toilet facilities. Very overpriced at 35 pound for one night with no electric and such poor facilities. Grass also very long so feet got soaked. Would not return.

Really nice little site.

Gostou Nice shower and bathroom facility, good welcome from the hosts.

Não gostou Slightly more expensive than other campsites, although that may be due to location - they all seemed relatively expensive this end of Anglesea. Pricing per tent makes it good value for larger groups but less good for solo traveller - I was bikepacking with my brother in a shared tent.

Atrações locais

Built in 1809, the South Stack Lighthouse (20 minutes’ drive) perches on a rocky headland stretching into the Irish Sea and is accessed via 400 steps carved into the cliff. After that, if your legs are up for the climb to the top of the tower, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the coast and birdlife, including puffins. Sitting on the Menai Strait, the National Trust-run Plas Newydd House and Gardens (25 minutes) has views all the way to the mountains of Snowdonia. One of its highlights is an enormous mural by the 20th-century artist Rex Whistler portraying a fictional view from the property. Meanwhile, the gardens include terraced areas, woodland walks and a collection of rhododendrons. Moated Beaumaris Castle (35 minutes) dates back to the time of Edward I (early 1300s). Although it was never completed due to funds running out, you can still check out its imposing walls, battlements and towers, and take in splendid views of the Menai Strait.
